Billing and Subscriptions

Scholarly offers three plans: Free, Premium, and Laureate. This guide covers how to manage your subscription, billing, and account.

Plans

• Free — Access to core study tools with lifetime allowances: 3 AI Chat messages, 500 autocomplete words, 5 quiz questions, 15 voice minutes, 1 completed practice exam, 1 AI Creation Credit, and 1 file upload. These allowances do not reset. No credit card required.
• Premium -- The core paid experience: unlimited AI Chat, 10 AI Creation Credits each week shared across flashcards, podcasts, video lectures, slides, meeting notes, and the other generators, uploads up to 300 MB, 1,000-page PDF flashcards, 2 hours of voice mode per day, flashcard exports to Anki, and priority support. The creation allowance resets every Monday at 00:00 UTC. Available monthly or yearly.
• Laureate -- $99/month, or the equivalent in your local billing currency. Everything in Premium, plus 80 AI Creation Credits each week on one credit balance: most models cost 1 credit, Claude Sonnet 5 and Kimi K3 cost 2, and the Frontier models GPT 6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5 cost 3. It also includes unlimited AI Chat, Gemini 3.8 Flash at medium reasoning for flashcards, priority generation with more simultaneous processing capacity, uploads up to 1 GB, 3,000-page PDF flashcards, 12 hours of voice mode per day, priority support, and early access to newly launched Frontier models.

Upgrading

Click Upgrade in the sidebar or visit the Pricing page to see plan options. Both places open the same two tabs above the plan cards:

• Personal -- Free, Premium, and Laureate for your own account.
• Business -- the same plans priced per seat for a team. You choose how many seats after picking a plan.

Once signed in, a new personal Premium buyer can choose Yearly or Monthly inside the plan card; the selected term carries into checkout. Personal Laureate is monthly. Signed-out Premium pricing shows the annual preview and asks you to choose after registration. An existing Premium subscriber upgrading in place to Laureate uses monthly Laureate billing for the prorated change. If the Premium subscription was yearly, the upgrade changes it to monthly Laureate billing.

Yearly Premium pricing varies by region. In some countries the yearly plan is shown and charged as a full yearly price rather than a monthly-equivalent rate, so read the term on the card before you confirm. Existing subscriptions keep the price they were bought at.

Prices are shown and charged in supported local billing currencies, so what you see on the card is what you pay.

Your upgrade takes effect immediately and you gain access to the paid features in that plan right away.

If you are already on Premium and choose Laureate, you do not go to the billing portal. Scholarly shows a confirmation screen with the prorated amount due today -- credit for your unused Premium time, any discount, and applicable tax already applied -- along with what you will pay each month after that. Your saved payment method is charged when you confirm.

Managing Your Subscription

Go to Settings → Billing to manage your plan. From there you can:

• View your current plan and renewal date.
• Move a monthly Premium subscription to yearly billing to save.
• Switch from Laureate down to Premium at your next renewal.
• Cancel your subscription.
• Update your payment method.
• Buy AI Creation Credits.

Switching From Laureate to Premium

If Laureate is more than you need, you don't have to cancel and re-subscribe. Settings → Billing offers Switch to Premium, which schedules the change for your next renewal instead of applying it immediately.

Before you confirm, the review step shows you exactly what changes:

• When — Laureate stays active until your renewal date, and Premium starts on that date.
• The new price, monthly or yearly, with taxes calculated on the invoice. Any Laureate discounts end when Premium starts.
• The new limits — your weekly AI Creation Credit allowance changes from Laureate's to Premium's, and Premium's feature and upload limits apply from that date.

Your existing content and any purchased credits stay in your account either way.

Once scheduled, Billing shows the date the change takes effect and an Undo downgrade button. You can undo it any time before it starts — and you should undo it before pausing or cancelling, since a subscription can only carry one scheduled change at a time.

Premium has no lower paid plan to step down to; from Premium, the options are pausing or cancelling.

Credit Packs

On a paid plan, Settings → Billing has an AI Creation Credits panel showing how many purchased credits you have left, with a Buy credits button. A pack is a one-time purchase, not a subscription -- there is nothing to renew or cancel.

Credits never expire, and they are spent automatically once your weekly allowance runs out. There is nothing to switch on and nothing to pick at creation time.

If you have bought a pack before, the window also compares what you have actually been spending -- your credit spend this month, how many creations it bought, and your price per creation -- against what a plan costs for the same work. Compare Laureate opens that plan with the comparison in view.

Pausing Your Subscription

If you need a break but don't want to lose your saved content or settings, you can pause your subscription instead of cancelling. While paused:

• Your billing stops until you come back.
• Your account stays intact -- flashcards, decks, podcasts, and notes are all where you left them.
• Resume anytime to get premium access back without setting anything up again.

The pause option appears as the first step when you start the cancel flow, so you can choose pause without committing to a full cancel.

Cancellation

Cancel your subscription anytime from the billing page. The flow walks you through a few short steps designed to make sure you get the right outcome:

1. What you would lose -- A plain summary of the paid features that switch off, so nothing is a surprise later.
2. Reason picker -- Pick the closest reason from a short list (too expensive, not using it enough, missing a feature, switching to a competitor, technical issues, or other). Some reasons let you add a quick free-text note so we know exactly what to fix.
3. A matching offer -- Based on your reason you may be offered a pause, a discount, a switch to annual billing, or a free artifact built from your own material. Take it or skip it.
4. Confirm and cancel -- Skip the offer and confirm to turn off renewal.

After canceling:

• You keep paid-plan access until the end of your current billing period.
• Your content (flashcards, PDFs, notes, podcasts, video lectures) is never deleted. Everything stays in your account.
• You can re-subscribe at any time to regain paid features.

Payment Methods

Scholarly accepts credit and debit cards. Payments are processed securely through Stripe. Scholarly does not store your card details directly.

Invoices

Invoices are available from the billing page. Click any past payment to view or download the invoice.

Refunds

If you were charged unexpectedly or have a billing issue, email hello@scholarly.so and we will sort it out.
