How much does Course Hero cost in 2026?

Course Hero doesn't work like a normal subscription — here's what the membership actually buys, next to Scholarly.

PlanPriceWhat you get
Course Hero membershipPaid subscription — see coursehero.com for current ratesFull access to the student-uploaded document library plus tutor questions. A free account only searches and previews; you unlock documents by paying or by uploading your own accepted documents.
Scholarly Free$01 lifetime free upload and 1 lifetime free AI creation (usable for a video lecture, research report, or any other tool), and answers grounded in your own course materials.
Scholarly Premium$12/month, billed annually at $144Higher limits across every study tool when the free plan isn't enough.

Before you price Course Hero, ask what the membership buys: access to documents other students uploaded, if your course happens to be covered. If what you actually need is study material for your own course, an AI tool that works from your own PDFs, slides, and lectures — and starts free — is usually the better spend.

Is Course Hero worth it in 2026?

Course Hero is worth paying for in one situation: the documents you need already exist in its library. If another student uploaded a good study guide or past exam for your exact course, unlocking it beats rebuilding it from scratch. The catch is that the hit rate is unpredictable — the library skews toward large, popular courses, and you usually can't tell how good a document is until you've spent an unlock on it.

It stops being worth it the moment your real job is studying your own material. A membership buys access to documents, not study tools: there's no flashcard system, no spaced repetition, no PDF summarizer, no study planner. AI tools have flipped that math — instead of hoping a stranger uploaded notes for your course, you upload your professor's actual slides and PDFs and generate summaries, flashcards, and study guides from them directly.

The bottom line: Course Hero is worth it if the specific documents you need are already in its library. If you need to turn your own course materials into summaries, flashcards, and practice — the actual studying — a free AI study tool like Scholarly is the better spend.

Where Course Hero Still Shines

Course Hero is a great tool with real strengths worth acknowledging.

Document Library

Course Hero's library of student-uploaded documents (notes, study guides, past exams) is unmatched. If your specific course has shared documents on the platform, that's real value.

Tutor Q&A

Course Hero offers tutor responses to specific questions, which can be helpful for difficult one-off problems.

Why Students Switch to Scholarly

Free Plan

Scholarly is free to start, so you can try it on your own material before paying. Course Hero gates almost everything behind a monthly subscription.

Works on Your Materials

Upload your own PDFs, slides, and notes. Get summaries, flashcards, and study guides built from your actual course — not generic shared documents.

Complete Study System

Flashcards, spaced repetition, study schedules, lab report help, math solving — all in one tool, instead of paying separately for each feature.

No Honor Code Risk

Scholarly helps you understand and study your own material. Course Hero's document library has flagged academic integrity issues at many universities.

How Scholarly Works

Step 1: Add Your Content

Upload PDFs, paste notes, add images, or link YouTube videos. Any study material works.

Step 2: AI Builds Your Study Materials

Our AI reads your material and turns it into grounded answers, flashcards, quizzes, summaries, and more.

Step 3: Study Your Way

Review with spaced repetition, listen as a podcast, watch as a video lecture, or export to Anki or PDF.

Scholarly vs Course Hero: A Closer Look

Course Hero is essentially a paywalled document library plus a Q&A board. The library has real value when your course has shared documents on the platform — but that hit rate is unpredictable.

More importantly, Course Hero doesn't help you actually study. There's no flashcard system, no spaced repetition, no PDF summarizer, no study schedule builder. You pay a monthly subscription for access to documents, then still have to do all the studying yourself.

Scholarly is the opposite: a study system built around your own materials. Upload your professor's slides, your textbook PDF, your lecture notes — and get summaries, flashcards, and study schedules generated for you. Free.
