Draw on any image, then ask about exactly that part

Circle the dip in a chart or the part of a diagram you keep mixing up, add a few words, and send it. Scholarly answers about what you marked.

Included on every plan. Works in chat, in your files, and in Image Studio.

A chart marked up with a red circle, an arrow, and the question "Why so steep?" in the Scholarly markup editor

In 30 seconds

Mark it, send it, get the answer

Attach a chart, circle the part you mean, write your question on it, and the reply starts from what you marked.

The tools

Everything you need to point at one thing

Six colors, three sizes, and undo for everything. Pick any mark later to move it, recolor it, or delete it.

Pen and highlighter

Freehand marks, and a highlighter that picks out a line of text without hiding it.

Arrows, boxes, and circles

Point at one thing. Hold Shift for straight arrows, squares, and circles.

Text on the image

Write the question where it belongs, like "Why so steep?" next to the drop.

Numbered markers

Markers that count up on their own, for steps 1, 2, and 3 of a process or a solution.

Hide private details

Pixelate a name, an email address, or a student number before you share a screenshot.

Crop and eraser

Keep only the part that matters, and remove any mark with one tap.

Before you send

Mark up an image you are about to send

Attach an image in chat and press the pencil on its chip. When you press Done, the marked-up copy replaces the original in your message.

  • Works with screenshots, photos of notes, charts, slides, and diagrams
  • The copy keeps the original's name, so you can tell which is which
  • Your original image is never changed

Images in the conversation

Ask about one part of an image chat made

Open any image in a conversation, including a diagram chat drew for you or a picture it found, and press Mark up. Add to chat puts the marked-up copy in your next message.

  • Circle the structure you keep mixing up and ask what it does
  • Circle a step in a worked solution and ask why it follows
  • The cursor lands in the message box, ready for your question

Image Studio

Show Image Studio the change you want

Press the pencil beside the edit bar, mark where the change goes, and add a short instruction if you like. Your drawing guides the edit and never ends up in the picture.

  • Circle a part and write what should change there
  • Every edit is a new version, and Compare shows before and after
  • Uses one image from your allowance, the same as a typed edit
More about Image Studio

On your phone

Made for your thumb, too

On a phone the editor has its own layout: Cancel and Done at the top, tools and colors at the bottom, and your finger as the pen.

  • Pinch to zoom in on small details
  • Undo, redo, and delete stay one tap away
  • Done puts the marked-up copy straight back in your message

How it works

Three steps

The same editor opens for every image in Scholarly.

  1. 01

    Open the image

Press the pencil on an image you are about to send, or Mark up on any image in a conversation, your files, or Image Studio.

  2. 02

    Draw on it

Circle, point, highlight, number, or write on the part you mean, and pixelate anything private.

  3. 03

    Send it or apply it

In chat, the marked-up copy goes into your message. In Image Studio, the edit follows your drawing.

Who uses it

Wherever a picture needs a pointer

Built for the moments when "this part here" is the whole question.

Students

Circle the part of a lecture slide, chart, or textbook diagram you don't follow, and ask about it directly.

Exam prep

Mark the step in a worked solution where you get lost, and ask why it follows from the line before.

Professionals

Point at the number on a dashboard screenshot or the clause in a scanned page, and hide client details first.

Training and content

Show Image Studio exactly where a label, arrow, or callout belongs in a diagram for a course or a deck.

FAQ

Questions about image markup

Is image markup free?

Yes. Markup is included on every plan. Sending a marked-up copy works like attaching any other image, so your plan's upload limits apply, and an Image Studio edit uses one image from your image allowance, the same as a typed edit.

Which images can I mark up?

Any image in Scholarly: an image you attach in chat, images already in a conversation (including ones chat made or found on the web), image files you open in your library, and every image in Image Studio.

Does marking up change my original image?

No. Scholarly makes a new copy with your marks on it and names it after the original, for example photo-marked-up.jpg. Photos stay JPEG and screenshots and diagrams stay PNG.

Can I hide private information before I share a screenshot?

Yes. The Hide tool pixelates any area you drag over, such as a name, an email address, or an ID number, in the copy you send. For anything truly sensitive, crop it out instead.

How does Image Studio use my drawing?

Studio sends your marked-up copy to the model as a guide, next to the clean original. Your marks show where and what to change, and they are not drawn into the new version. Crop and Hide are not offered in Studio, because the guide has to keep the original's frame.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Phones get their own layout with the tools at the bottom, and you draw with your finger. Pinch to zoom in on small details.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

On a computer: P pen, H highlighter, A arrow, R box, O circle, T text, N numbered marker, B hide, C crop, E eraser, and V to select. Command or Control with Z undoes, and Delete removes the selected mark.

Point at the part you mean

Attach a screenshot of the slide, chart, or page you are stuck on, circle it, and ask.

Included on every plan.
