Settings
Access Settings from the sidebar or your profile menu. Scholarly lets you customize how the platform looks, sounds, and behaves.
Profile
- Name and email -- Update your display name and email address.
- Profile picture -- Upload a photo or avatar.
AI Voice Preference
Choose from Scholarly's searchable voice library. Luna is the default for clear, patient explanations. This setting affects:
- Voice mode -- The voice used during live AI conversations.
- Read aloud -- The voice used for spoken chat replies, flashcards, and selected text.
Change your voice at any time from Settings or directly from the voice bar during a conversation.
Generated podcasts and video lectures have their own voice choices during creation; changing the assistant voice does not change them.
Voice Playback Speed
Adjust how fast the AI speaks during voice mode. Choose from 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x speed. Change the playback speed from the voice bar during a conversation.
AI Assistant Instructions
Add custom instructions that apply to every AI conversation. For example: "Always explain concepts at a college freshman level" or "Include examples from biology when possible." These instructions persist across all your chat sessions.
Language Preference
Your saved language is shared by AI Chat and every creation tool, including flashcards, quizzes, slides, podcasts, and video lectures. On first use, Scholarly matches a supported browser locale and falls back to English when there is no match. Changing Language in Settings or any create window updates the same account preference everywhere. You can still choose Auto when you want the AI to follow the source material's language.
Number of Flashcards
Set how many cards to generate before you create a deck. Number of flashcards lives in the create window's Settings section, right next to Language and the AI Model picker -- choose Low, Medium, High, or Very High to control coverage. Quiz decks have the same control, labeled Number of questions. AI-generated counts are targets, not guarantees -- short or sparse sources can produce fewer cards than the target. See Flashcards, Quizzes, and Exams for the full customization walkthrough.
Memory
Manage what the AI Assistant remembers about you from Settings → Chat → Memories. Add a fact yourself, review what's been saved automatically from chat, or mark an outdated memory so the AI stops using it. See Memory for the full guide.
Customization Profiles
Manage reusable instructions, a preferred AI model, and visual identity from Settings → AI Creations → Customization Profiles. Personal profiles work across every creation; Team admins can also publish Team profiles, and Projects can choose a default. Existing Saved Instructions and Custom Designs are preserved automatically. See Customization Profiles for the full walkthrough.
Skills
The Skills tab lets you manage your custom slash commands. From here you can:
- Create new skills — Add a name, set the
/command, and write the prompt the AI should follow. - Edit existing skills — Update the title or prompt of any skill you have created.
- Delete skills — Remove skills you no longer use.
- Import skills — Load skills from
.mdfiles.
The tab separates your custom skills from built-in predefined skills (like /summary and /study-guide), which are locked and cannot be modified. See the Slash Commands guide for more details.
Theme
Switch between Light, System, and Dark mode. Each option is clearly labeled next to its icon. The entire app adapts to your choice, including the editor, chat, study mode, and all content pages.
Connections
Connections has its own page in the sidebar below Library instead of a Settings tab. Connect Google Drive, then manage its accounts, default, reconnect state, and disconnect controls. Drive includes only the Docs, Slides, and other files you choose through Google's Picker. See Connections for the full guide.
Billing
Open the Billing tab to see your current plan, change payment methods, move an existing monthly Premium subscription to yearly billing, or cancel. Cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period — you keep access to paid features until then. See Billing and Subscriptions.
Notifications
Control which email notifications you receive:
- Podcast completion -- Get an email when a generated podcast is ready.
- Flashcard completion -- Get an email when a generated flashcard deck is ready.
- Video lecture completion -- Get an email when a generated video is ready.
- Product & marketing emails -- Occasional updates about new features and tips.
Accessibility
- Instant AI Responses -- Skip the streaming-character animation in AI Chat. Replies appear all at once the moment the model finishes, instead of typing themselves out. Helpful if motion is distracting or you just want answers as fast as possible.
- Keyboard shortcuts reference -- View a summary of available shortcuts for study mode and navigation. See Keyboard Shortcuts.
