Guide Notes

Notes and Pages

Pages are Scholarly's built-in rich text editor. Use them for lecture notes, study guides, or any freeform writing. Every page includes AI-powered autocomplete, a full set of content components, and an AI chat sidebar.

Creating a Page

Create a new page from the home page content table or through the Create menu in the sidebar. Pages appear in your sidebar and home page alongside your other content.

Editor Components

The editor supports several component types. Add them from the toolbar or with slash commands.

  • Text -- Rich text with full formatting (bold, italic, headings, lists, links).
  • Code blocks -- Syntax-highlighted code with language selection.
  • Equations -- LaTeX/KaTeX math expressions rendered inline or as blocks.
  • Tables -- Structured data with rows, columns, and formatting options (see below).
  • Images -- Upload or embed images with optional captions.
  • Videos -- Embed video content directly in your notes.
  • Dividers -- Visual separators between sections.

Drag and drop any component to reorder it within the page.

Tables

Tables support a full set of editing controls:

  • Add and remove rows and columns
  • Resize columns by dragging borders
  • Toggle header row on or off
  • Set background colors on individual cells
  • Tab through cells to move quickly between them

Select a table and click AI Edit to rewrite, shorten, or restructure the content. The AI understands table formatting and returns a properly formatted result.

Tables are included when you export a page as PDF or Markdown.

AI Autocomplete

As you type, AI suggestions stream in progressively — you see completions appear word by word instead of waiting for the full suggestion. Press Tab to accept a suggestion. Use the arrow keys to browse alternative completions before accepting.

Suggestions stream in progressively — you see the beginning of a completion before it finishes generating, so there is almost no waiting. Autocomplete triggers quickly after you stop typing.

Autocomplete is context-aware — it adapts to your writing style and backs off automatically after repeated dismissals to reduce distraction.

AI Text Edit

Select any text to open the AI edit menu. Choose from preset actions:

  • Simplify -- Shorten and clarify the selected text
  • Expand -- Add detail and elaboration
  • Make formal -- Shift to a professional tone
  • Make casual -- Shift to a conversational tone
  • Fix grammar -- Correct grammar and spelling errors
  • Custom instructions -- Describe exactly how you want the text changed

Create Study Materials from Pages

Use your notes as source material for other features. From page-level actions or by selecting text:

  • Create Flashcards -- Generate flashcards from your notes or selected text.
  • Create Quiz -- Build a quiz based on the page content.
  • Create Research -- Start a research session using the page as context.
  • Create Video Lecture -- Generate a narrated video from your notes.

Page Icons

Click the icon area at the top of any page to open the emoji picker. Choose an icon to make pages easier to identify in the sidebar and home page.

Sub-Pages

Pages can be nested. Create a sub-page inside any existing page to build hierarchical note structures. Sub-pages appear indented under their parent in the sidebar.

AI Chat Sidebar

Every page has an AI chat sidebar. Open it to ask questions about your notes, request summaries, or get help expanding on a topic. The AI has full context of the page content.

Export

Export any page in two formats:

  • PDF -- A formatted document including tables, equations, and images.
  • Markdown -- Plain text with Markdown syntax for use in other tools.

Dark Mode

The editor fully supports dark mode. All components, formatting, and the toolbar adapt to your selected theme.
