Guide Canvas

Chat Canvas

The Canvas is a freehand drawing tool built into AI Chat. Sketch a diagram, write out an equation, or draw a concept map -- then send it to the AI and ask questions about what you drew.

Opening the Canvas

Click the Canvas button in the chat input area to open the drawing modal. The canvas opens as a full-width overlay where you can draw freely before sending your sketch to the conversation.

Drawing Tools

The toolbar across the top of the canvas gives you everything you need:

  • Pen -- Freehand drawing. The default tool.
  • Eraser -- Remove strokes by drawing over them.
  • Colors -- Pick from a palette of colors for your strokes.
  • Size -- Adjust stroke thickness with the slider (1--30).
  • Undo / Redo -- Step backward or forward through your drawing history. Keyboard shortcuts work too (Cmd/Ctrl+Z for undo, Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+Z for redo).
  • Clear -- Erase the entire canvas and start over.

Sending a Drawing

When you are happy with your sketch, click Send to attach it to your current chat message. The drawing is captured as an image and sent to the AI along with any text you typed in the chat input.

You can also add a question or instruction alongside the drawing -- for example, "Is this diagram correct?" or "Label the parts of this circuit."

What the AI Can Do with Your Drawing

The AI sees your sketch as an image and can:

  • Identify what you drew -- label parts of a diagram, name a molecule, or recognize a graph shape.
  • Correct mistakes -- point out errors in a circuit, equation, or process flow.
  • Explain concepts -- walk through what each part of your drawing represents.
  • Extend your work -- suggest additions, fill in missing steps, or redraw the concept more clearly using generated images.

Use Cases

  • Math and science -- Sketch a graph and ask the AI to identify the function. Draw a free-body diagram and have the AI check your force labels.
  • Biology and chemistry -- Draw a cell, molecule, or reaction pathway and ask for corrections or explanations.
  • Study planning -- Sketch a concept map and ask the AI to fill in connections you missed.
  • Quick communication -- Sometimes a rough drawing explains your question faster than typing it out.

Tips

  • You do not need to draw perfectly. The AI is good at interpreting rough sketches and handwriting.
  • Combine drawings with text for the best results -- a sketch labeled "Is this right?" gives the AI clear context.
  • Use different colors to distinguish parts of your diagram before sending.
  • The canvas supports touch input, so it works on tablets and touchscreen laptops too.
