Retrying with a Different Model
If an AI response misses the mark, you do not have to start a new chat or rewrite your prompt. You can retry the response with a different model, keep both versions, and switch between them at any time.
Retrying a Response
Hover over any AI message in chat. A Retry button appears in the message actions. Click it to open the model menu -- the same one used when you start a new conversation -- and pick which model should regenerate the answer.
The new response streams in below the original. Both versions stay attached to the same conversation, so nothing is overwritten.
Switching Between Variants
When a message has more than one variant, a small switcher appears under the response showing how many variants exist (for example, 1 / 3). Use the arrows to flip between them.
Whichever variant you have selected is the one the AI uses as context for follow-up messages. So if you write a follow-up after switching to variant 2, the AI continues from variant 2 -- not the original.
Why Use Variants
- Compare model strengths -- See how a thinking model handles your question versus a fast non-thinking one.
- Try a different angle -- Sometimes the same prompt produces a better answer on a second try, even with the same model.
- Branching exploration -- Follow up on one variant, switch back, and follow up on a different one without losing either thread.
When You Cannot Retry
- You cannot retry while the original response is still streaming. Wait for it to finish, then click Retry.
- Retry is only available on AI responses, not on your own messages. To rephrase your question, edit your message instead.
Tips
- Use Retry to A/B test models on harder questions before you commit to one for the rest of the chat.
- Switching to an older variant rolls the conversation context back to that point. Anything you wrote after that variant stays attached only to the variant it followed up on.
- Variants count toward your daily chat usage just like any other AI response.
