How it works

From document to CSV in three steps

The CSV Table tile inside Scholarly's AI File Creator does one thing: produce a single, import-ready table from your material.

  1. 01

    Add your sources

Upload PDFs, Word docs, PowerPoints, spreadsheets, or text files, pick files from your library or Google Drive, or paste a URL. Use up to 3 sources and choose specific PDF page ranges.

  2. 02

Pick CSV Table and name your columns

Choose the CSV Table tile, then use custom instructions to name the columns you want. The generator builds one header row and one record per row — nothing outside the table.

  3. 03

    Download and import

The finished .csv is saved to your library and downloads instantly. Open it in Excel or Google Sheets, or import it into Airtable, Notion, a CRM, or a database.

Use cases

What people turn into CSV

Anything with repeated records buried in prose, slides, or PDF tables.

Extract a table from a PDF report

Financial statements, audit findings, lab results, and survey summaries usually arrive as PDF tables that will not paste cleanly. Get the rows as a real CSV with consistent columns.

Example: quarterly results PDF → revenue by region, one row per region per quarter.

Build a lead or contact list

Turn conference attendee sheets, directories, or exported proposals into a flat list with name, company, role, and email columns ready for a CRM import.

Example: sponsor prospectus PDF → company, tier, contact, amount.

Inventory, catalogue, and pricing data

Product catalogues and price lists become one record per SKU with the attributes you name, so stock systems and e-commerce tools can read them directly.

Example: supplier price list → sku, description, unit_price, lead_time_days.

Research and study datasets

Pull study comparisons, drug dosages, case law summaries, or glossary terms out of papers and textbooks into a table you can sort, filter, and chart.

Example: three papers → study, sample_size, method, key_finding.

What you get

A CSV that imports on the first try

The output follows the rules importers expect, so you spend no time cleaning it up.

Precise column names

One header row with specific column names — tell the generator the names you want in custom instructions and it uses them.

One record per row

Every row is a single record. No merged cells, subtotals, footnotes, or commentary mixed into the data.

Imports anywhere

Plain CSV opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, Airtable, Notion databases, and any SQL import tool.

Grounded in your sources

Values come from the files you upload. If the source does not state a value, the cell stays empty instead of being guessed.

Pick exactly which pages

For PDFs, select the page range the table should be built from, so a 200-page report only contributes the chapter you need.

Need formulas? Use Spreadsheet

CSV is flat by design. If you want multiple sheets and working formulas, the Spreadsheet tile in the same creator builds an .xlsx workbook.

Why CSV

Why a flat CSV beats a pasted table

Updated August 2026

Upload up to 3 sources — PDFs, Word docs, slides, spreadsheets, text files, Google Drive files, or a URL — pick the CSV Table tile, and Scholarly generates a single flat .csv with one header row and one record per row, saved to your library and ready to download. The Free plan includes one lifetime AI creation and one upload (8MB or 32 PDF pages). Premium ($30/mo or $144/yr) allows 10 AI creations per week and Laureate ($99/mo) allows 80.

Chat tools answer with a Markdown table that looks fine on screen and falls apart on import: merged headers, notes under the table, numbers formatted as text. CSV is the lowest common denominator every data tool understands, which is exactly why the CSV Table tile is strict about producing nothing but the table.

Because the generator reads your uploaded sources rather than answering from memory, the rows are your rows — the suppliers in your contract, the studies in your literature review, the SKUs in your price list. Where the document is silent, the cell is left blank so you can see the gap instead of trusting a plausible-looking filler.

The result is a real file in your Scholarly library, not text in a chat window. Download it, drop it into Sheets or a database, and keep the source file alongside it so you can always trace a value back to the page it came from.

Good to know before you generate

The CSV tile is deliberately narrow. These are the boundaries to plan around.

  • One table per file. If your sources describe several unrelated tables, generate them separately or use the Spreadsheet tile for a multi-sheet workbook.
  • CSV has no formulas, formatting, or data types — numbers and dates are plain text until your importer parses them. Name the format you want (for example ISO dates) in custom instructions.
  • Each generation pulls from up to 3 sources. The Free plan accepts one upload of up to 8MB or 32 PDF pages; paid plans raise the upload limits.
  • Each CSV counts as one AI creation from the same weekly allowance as flashcards, podcasts, videos, and other Scholarly tools.

For work and teams

Professionals use the CSV tile to get data out of documents that were never meant to be data: CRM lists from event PDFs, inventory records from supplier catalogues, lead lists from proposals, and compliance registers from policy binders. Name the columns once, and every document in the same family comes out in the same shape.

Teams plans add shared libraries, so a whole department can generate from the same source files and keep the resulting CSVs, spreadsheets, and SOPs in one place.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I generate a CSV from a PDF?

Yes. Upload the PDF, optionally choose the page range that holds the table, pick the CSV Table tile, and name the columns you want. You get a .csv with one header row and one record per row.

How do I control the column names?

Add them to the custom instructions before generating, for example "columns: supplier, contract_start, annual_value_usd". The generator uses precise column names and keeps one record per row.

Does it invent values when the document is missing something?

No. Scholarly's file creator is source-grounded: if your source does not state a value, the cell is left empty rather than filled with a guess.

What is the difference between the CSV tile and the Spreadsheet tile?

CSV produces one flat table with no formulas, which imports anywhere. The Spreadsheet tile produces an Excel .xlsx workbook with multiple sheets and working formulas. Both live inside the AI File Creator.

Is the AI CSV generator free?

Scholarly is free to start: the Free plan includes one lifetime AI creation and one upload of up to 8MB or 32 PDF pages. Premium ($30/mo or $144/yr) allows 10 AI creations per week, and Laureate ($99/mo) allows 80 per week.
