Why students love it

Why students love AI Spreadsheets

Stop copy-pasting tables by hand. Turn your sources into an organized workbook you can actually open and edit.

Real Excel files, not screenshots

You get an actual .xlsx workbook — multiple sheets, frozen header rows, and working formulas — that opens in Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers. Not a CSV, not an HTML table, not a picture you have to retype.

Grounded in your own material

Every sheet name, column header, and row of data is pulled faithfully from your uploads. The AI extracts the actual content from your PDFs, notes, and slides — it never invents numbers or facts.

Four study-ready styles

Pick Data Workbook, Study Tracker, Comparison Matrix, or Review Planner. Each lays out your material the way you'll actually study it — clean tables, progress columns, side-by-side comparisons, or a prioritized task list.

How it works

How it works

Three steps from your source material to a downloadable Excel workbook.

01

Upload and select a style

Add up to 3 files — PDF, Word, PowerPoint, a spreadsheet, a text file, or a Google Drive file — or just type a topic prompt. Then choose a workbook style: Data Workbook, Study Tracker, Comparison Matrix, or Review Planner, and add any custom instructions.

02

AI builds it in a sandbox

The agent reads the extracted content from your sources, then plans the sheets, columns, and formulas before building a real .xlsx file with Python. It validates the workbook for non-empty sheets, correct formula references, and meaningful content.

03

Download and store

Your finished workbook is saved to your library as a downloadable .xlsx file. Download it directly or open it later — it's fully editable in Excel or any spreadsheet app. Generation usually takes a few minutes; you don't have to wait around.

Workbook styles

Four workbook styles to pick from

The same source material, organized the way you need it. Each style decides the sheets, columns, and layout.

Data Workbook

Default

Clean source tables with an overview sheet, frozen headers, a summary sheet, and formulas where the numbers add up. Best for pulling datasets out of textbook chapters or data-heavy PDFs.

Study Tracker

Free

A concept list with progress columns and review-date columns, so you can check off what you've mastered and schedule what to revisit.

Comparison Matrix

Free

Side-by-side columns that line up topics, cases, or theories against shared criteria — perfect for comparing readings before an exam.

Review Planner

Free

A prioritized task list with topics, deadlines, and prioritization, built from your syllabus and notes so you know what to study first.

Whichever style you pick, every workbook is a real .xlsx file grounded in your own sources — and you can add custom instructions to fine-tune it.

Inside every workbook

Everything in your generated workbook

All the structure you'd build by hand — sheets, headers, formulas, and an overview — done for you.

Real .xlsx workbooks

Generates true, editable Excel files — never a CSV, never an HTML table. Open and edit in Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers.

Four workbook styles

Data Workbook, Study Tracker, Comparison Matrix, and Review Planner — each with its own sheets, columns, and layout.

Source-grounded data

All content is faithfully extracted from your uploads. The AI never invents data, numbers, or facts that aren't in your material.

Automatic sheet planning

Overview or index sheets, column headers, frozen panes, and summary sheets with formulas are all planned and built for you.

Multiple sheets

One to six or more sheets depending on the size of your material and the style you choose — organized, not crammed into one tab.

Working formulas

Summary and calculated sheets include real formulas where the numbers warrant them, with references the AI validates before finishing.

Mixed sources in one file

Combine PDFs, Word docs, PowerPoint, spreadsheets, and text files into a single workbook — up to 3 sources per request.

Custom instructions

Tell the AI exactly what you need — "add a summary sheet", "include formulas for totals", or "one sheet per chapter".

Multi-language support

Workbooks are generated in your selected language, so sheet names, headers, and content match how you study.

Stored in your library

Every workbook persists as a downloadable artifact in your library, editable anytime and accessible from the /spreadsheets route.

Typed prompt, no file needed

No source? Type a topic and the AI builds a structured workbook from scratch — same sheets, headers, and formulas.

Google Drive input

Connect Google Drive with one click and pull files straight into your workbook — no downloading and re-uploading.

Best for

What students build with it

Real workflows, from lecture notes to exam comparisons — here's what AI Spreadsheets is great at.

Study-tracker spreadsheets from notes

Upload 3 lecture-note PDFs, pick Study Tracker, and get a workbook with concept lists, progress columns, and review scheduling you can check off as you go.

Comparison tables from readings

Upload case studies or research papers, pick Comparison Matrix, and get a side-by-side analysis table that's ready to study from before an exam.

Review and planning workbooks

Upload your syllabus and notes, pick Review Planner, and get a prioritized task list with topics and deadlines so you know what to tackle first.

Datasets from textbooks

Upload textbook chapters or data-heavy PDFs, pick Data Workbook, and get clean tables with summary calculations pulled straight from the source.

Honest comparison

How Scholarly compares

Other tools are great for building spreadsheets — but not for turning your study material into one. Here's where each one wins.

Google Sheets (manual)

Best for hands-on, collaborative spreadsheets. Free, available anywhere, and easy to share and edit with classmates.

Great once the data is already in the sheet.

Requires manual data entry — it won't read your PDFs or notes for you.

No AI organization, no workbook styles, no auto-extraction.

ChatGPT with export (manual)

Best for talking through what a sheet should contain. A general-purpose chat that can suggest columns and structure.

Useful for brainstorming a layout before you build it.

No real document understanding — you copy-paste and format it yourself.

No automatic .xlsx generation and no workbook-style presets.

Best for students
Scholarly

Best for turning your own material into a workbook. Reads your PDFs, notes, slides, or a topic and builds a real .xlsx for you.

Four study-ready styles with auto-planned sheets, frozen headers, and formulas.

Source-grounded data and custom instructions — no inventing, no manual entry.

Free to start, stored in your library, editable in any spreadsheet app.

What it doesn't do

Honest about the limits

So you know exactly what to expect before you generate.

No charts or pivot tables

It generates tables, formulas, and structured sheets — but it doesn't auto-create charts, graphs, or pivot tables. You can add those yourself in Excel.

Text-searchable PDFs only

It can't extract data from images, handwriting, or scanned PDFs. Use text-based files for accurate results.

The agent decides the structure

You can steer it with custom instructions, but you can't pre-specify exact column names or formulas — the AI plans the layout for you.

No live data or real-time collaboration

It won't merge with external databases or live data sources, and it doesn't support real-time shared generation. Very large files (100+ pages) may exceed the processing timeout.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does it generate a real Excel file?

Yes. You get a true, editable .xlsx workbook — not a CSV, not an HTML table, and not a screenshot. It opens directly in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or Apple Numbers, with multiple sheets, frozen header rows, and working formulas already in place.

What files can I upload?

PDFs, Word documents (.docx), PowerPoint slides (.pptx), Excel spreadsheets (.xlsx), text files (.txt and .md), and Google Drive files via OAuth. You can also paste a website URL or just type a topic prompt with no file at all. You can combine up to 3 sources in a single request.

Can I generate a workbook without uploading anything?

Yes. Type a topic prompt and the AI builds a structured workbook from scratch — same multiple sheets, headers, and formulas as a file-based one. A source file just makes the data more specific to your material.

What workbook styles can I choose?

Four: Data Workbook (clean source tables with a summary and formulas), Study Tracker (concepts with progress and review-date columns), Comparison Matrix (side-by-side columns), and Review Planner (a prioritized task list with deadlines). Each style decides the sheets, columns, and layout.

How many sheets will my workbook have?

Usually one to six or more, depending on how much source material you provide and which style you pick. Multi-sheet workbooks also get an overview or index sheet so you can navigate them easily.

Is the data made up, or pulled from my sources?

Pulled from your sources. The AI extracts the actual content from your uploads — sheet names, column headers, and row data are all grounded in your material. It does not invent numbers or facts that aren't in what you provided.

Can it read scanned PDFs or handwriting?

No. It works with text-searchable PDFs and documents — it can't extract data from images, handwriting, or scanned pages. For the most accurate workbook, upload text-based files. Very large files (100+ pages) may also exceed the processing timeout.

Can I specify the exact columns and formulas?

Not exactly, but you can steer it. Add custom instructions like "include a summary sheet" or "add formulas for totals" and the agent plans the structure around them. It decides the final sheet and column layout so the workbook stays coherent.

Is the AI Spreadsheet Generator free?

Yes — it's free to start. Free plans include a default AI model and basic generation with daily AI-creation limits. Premium and Ultimate plans unlock additional AI model choices and higher daily limits. Spreadsheet generation shares the same daily AI-creation pool as slides, study guides, and worksheets, and refunds are available for failed generations.

Where do my workbooks go after they're generated?

Each finished workbook is saved to your library as a downloadable .xlsx artifact and is accessible from the /spreadsheets route. You can download it, open it later, or edit it in Excel or any spreadsheet app at any time.
