There is no drawing step. You are not dragging nodes around a canvas or picking a template — you hand over the material and the model does the structuring. That matters because the hard part of mind mapping was never the shapes; it was deciding what the central idea is, which points deserve a branch of their own, and which are details hanging off a bigger point.

Under the hood, the tool sends your text to a model instructed to find one clear central concept, branch out to the main ideas, add sub-branches for detail down to the depth you chose, keep every label to a keyword or short phrase, and show how the concepts relate to each other. What You Can Turn Into a Mind Map

What the Finished Mind Map Actually Contains

Every map has the same skeleton: one central concept in the middle, first-level branches for the main ideas, and progressively smaller sub-branches carrying the supporting detail. Labels are deliberately short — keywords and phrases rather than sentences — because a mind map earns its keep by being scannable in one glance, not by reproducing your notes in a new shape.

The map also carries relationships, not just nesting. Where two ideas connect across branches, or where one stage produces the input for the next, the generator names that link instead of leaving you to infer it. That is the difference between an outline with indentation and a map you can actually reason about while you revise.

A Worked Example: Eleven Pages of Notes, One Map

Say you paste an eleven-page biology handout on cellular respiration — dense prose covering glycolysis, the link reaction, the Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation, with ATP yields scattered through the text and buried in diagrams. Eleven pages collapse into four branches you can hold in your head at once, and the structure itself teaches something the prose buried: three of the four stages happen in or on the mitochondrion, and each stage hands its product to the next one. Switch the format to Mermaid and the same hierarchy comes back as diagram code you can open in Mermaid Live to see it drawn.

Structured Text, Markdown, or Mermaid — Which to Pick

The three output formats are the same map rendered three ways. Pick based on where the map is going next:

  • Structured text — the default. An indented hierarchy of headings, dashes, and bullets, readable as-is on the page. Best when you simply want to look at the map and study from it.
  • Markdown — the same hierarchy in clean Markdown, ready to paste into a notes app, a wiki, or a study doc without reformatting. Downloads as a .md file.
  • Mermaid diagram — diagram code rather than prose. Download it as a .mmd file, or click straight through to Mermaid Live to see the map drawn as an actual diagram you can screenshot or embed.

How Deep Should the Map Go?

Depth is the single control that changes the character of the output most. Two levels gives you a map of the territory; five gives you something close to a full outline. Match it to what you are actually doing rather than always reaching for the most detail:

  • 2 levels (Simple) — central idea plus main branches only. Good for a first orientation pass, or for checking that you can still name the big pieces of a topic.
  • 3 levels (Standard) — main branches with one layer of supporting points. The right default for a single lecture, a chapter, or one well-bounded topic.
  • 4 levels (Detailed) — adds a further layer of specifics. Useful for processes and mechanisms where the steps have steps of their own.
  • 5 levels (Comprehensive) — close to a complete outline of the source. Best for a whole unit or a long document, but expect a map too dense to read at a glance.

What to Do With the Map After You Generate It

A mind map is a thinking tool, not a finished product. It earns its time when you use it to find the gaps and then close them:

    Read it against your own memory. Cover the map, list what you believe the main branches are, then compare. The branches you missed are the ones worth studying tonight.

    Regenerate the weak branch on its own. Take the branch that felt thin, paste just that section of your notes back in as new content, and generate a deeper map of that one piece.

When a Mind Map Is the Wrong Tool

Honest answer: a mind map is a bad fit more often than mind-mapping enthusiasts admit. Reach for something else when:

  • The material is genuinely a sequence — a legal procedure, a lab protocol, a proof. A radial map fights linear content. Write the steps in order instead.
  • The labelled relationships are the whole point — causes, produces, requires. That is a concept map, not a mind map, and Scholarly has a separate free tool built for exactly that.
  • You are memorising discrete facts — vocabulary, dates, formulae, drug doses. Structure does not help here; repeated retrieval does. Go straight to flashcards.
  • The topic has no real hierarchy — a set of unrelated exam topics or a reading list produces a map with one branch per item and nothing gained over a plain list.
  • You need the answer to one question — do not map a whole chapter to find a single definition. Search the source, or ask about it directly, and get on with your work.

Where a mind map genuinely wins: the first pass through an unfamiliar topic, any subject built around a central object with parts or processes hanging off it, and the moment before an exam when you need to check you can still see the shape of a unit rather than only its details.

Mind Map vs Concept Map

They are not the same diagram. A mind map has one centre and radiates outward: everything on the page belongs to the central topic, and the hierarchy itself carries the meaning. A concept map is a network — many nodes, links running in any direction, and every link labelled with the relationship it represents.

Practical rule: if you are trying to see the shape of a topic, use a mind map. If you are trying to explain how a system works — what causes what, what requires what — use a concept map, where the labels on the links do the explaining.
