Comparing tools for a whole team?

Scholarly Teams puts your team, class, lab, or company on one Premium or Laureate plan — the chosen access for every member, all built from your shared material.

Where Perplexity Still Shines

Perplexity is a great tool with real strengths worth acknowledging.

The specialist for open-web research

Perplexity is an excellent answer engine: ask a question and it searches the live web, synthesizes an answer, and cites its sources fast. For news, market checks, and quick factual research across the internet, it is the specialist and a strong choice.

Comet and a growing research ecosystem

Perplexity ships its own browser, Comet, and its Max tier (see Perplexity's pricing page) adds unlimited Labs plus Perplexity Computer with 10,000 monthly credits. If you want an AI-native browsing and research environment, Perplexity is investing heavily there.

Frontier model choice on Pro

Model choice is not the difference between these tools. Perplexity Pro also lets you pick across providers, with a default set that includes GPT 5.6 Sol with Thinking, Claude Opus 5 with Thinking, and Gemini 3.1 Pro with Thinking alongside its own Sonar models. The real difference is what each product is built around.

Why People Switch to Scholarly

Your documents are the ground truth

Perplexity starts from a question and searches the web. Scholarly starts from your library: upload PDFs, slides, recordings, and web pages once, and every chat, quiz, video, and report is grounded in that material with citations back to the page. Your contracts, course notes, and SOPs are not on the open web, and they are exactly what Scholarly is built to work over.

Finished artifacts, not just answers

An answer engine leaves you with an answer. Scholarly turns your sources into narrated video lectures with up to 45 chaptered minutes, three-speaker cited podcasts, graded practice exams, flashcard decks, slide decks, infographics, and meeting notes from recordings. You leave with something you can study, share, or train a team with.

Built for studying and training

Scholarly is a learning platform, not a search tool. Flashcards use SM-2 spaced repetition and export to Anki, practice exams come back graded, and everything cites the source page so you can verify as you review. Licensure candidates and teams building internal training get a workflow, not a results page.

Unlimited chat across seven AI labs

Every paid Scholarly plan includes unlimited AI chat across models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, Z.ai, DeepSeek, and Meta, switchable mid-conversation with automatic cross-provider fallback. Weekly AI Creation Credits meter only heavy creation jobs like videos and podcasts, never your chat.

A real team workspace

Scholarly Teams (1-29 seats self-serve, Premium Teams $35/seat/mo) gives a team one shared source library, Owner/Admin/Member roles, per-team model controls, activity reporting, and one Stripe bill. Upload the handbook once and everyone gets the same grounded answers, training videos, and quizzes from it.

Web research is covered too

When you do need the open web, Scholarly's Deep Research produces cited research reports, and the results can live in your library next to your own documents. Perplexity remains the specialist for fast web answers; Scholarly makes web research one capability among many rather than the whole product.

How Scholarly Works

Step 1: Add Your Content

Upload PDFs, paste notes, add images, or link YouTube videos. Any study material works.

Step 2: AI Builds Your Study Materials

Our AI reads your material and turns it into grounded answers, flashcards, quizzes, summaries, and more.

Step 3: Study Your Way

Review with spaced repetition, listen as a podcast, watch as a video lecture, or export to Anki or PDF.

Scholarly vs Perplexity: A Closer Look

The clearest way to compare these tools is by what they are built around. Perplexity is built around the web: you ask, it searches, and it answers with citations to sites. Scholarly is built around your documents: you upload, and everything that follows, from chat to video lectures, is grounded in that persistent library with page-level citations into your own files. If your questions are about the world, Perplexity fits. If your questions are about your material, a 300-page regulation, a course packet, a folder of client documents, Scholarly fits.

The second difference is the output. Perplexity's product is an answer. Scholarly's product is an artifact: a chaptered, narrated video lecture built from your compliance manual, a three-speaker podcast from a research paper, a graded practice exam from your notes, a flashcard deck with SM-2 spaced repetition that exports to Anki. For professionals turning documents into training, and for anyone studying toward an exam, the artifact is the point.

On price: Perplexity sells Pro, a student-verified Education Pro, and Max tiers; see Perplexity's pricing page for current rates. Scholarly Premium is $30/mo or $144/yr with 10 weekly creation credits, Laureate is $99/mo with 80, and Premium Teams is $35/seat/mo (or $336/seat/yr) for 1-29 seats. If fast web research is the whole job, Perplexity is the cheaper specialist. If the job is getting real study and training material out of your own documents, that is what Scholarly's credits buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Scholarly a good Perplexity alternative?

Yes, if your work centers on your own documents rather than the open web. Scholarly grounds every answer in a persistent uploaded source library with page-level citations, then turns those sources into video lectures, podcasts, graded exams, flashcards, and reports. If you mainly want fast cited answers from the live web, Perplexity remains the specialist.

What is the main difference between Scholarly and Perplexity?

What each product is built around. Perplexity is an answer engine over the web: ask a question, get a cited answer from live search. Scholarly is a workspace over your documents: upload your material once, and every chat and artifact shares that library, cites your pages, and can become a finished video, podcast, exam, or flashcard deck.

Can Scholarly do web research like Perplexity?

Scholarly's Deep Research produces cited research reports when you need the open web, so web research is covered. Perplexity is the specialist at fast, conversational web answers, though, and if that is most of what you do, it is the better fit. Scholarly's strength is everything that happens with your own sources.

Which AI models does Scholarly include?

The chat roster spans seven labs: OpenAI GPT 5.6 Luna, Anthropic Claude Haiku 4.5, Google Gemini 3.8 Flash, Gemini 3 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite, Mistral Large 3 and Small 4, Z.ai GLM 5.3 Flash, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, and Meta Muse Spark 1.3, switchable mid-conversation with automatic fallback. The creation tools go wider: Claude Sonnet 5, GPT 5.6 Terra, Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview, Grok 4.6, Kimi K3, and the Frontier models GPT 5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5. Note that Perplexity Pro also offers cross-provider model choice; model access is not the main difference between the two.

Is Scholarly's AI chat really unlimited?

On paid plans, yes: AI chat across the standard model roster has no message cap. Weekly AI Creation Credits meter heavier creation jobs such as video lectures and podcasts. The free plan is a trial: 3 lifetime chat messages, 1 lifetime AI Creation Credit, and 1 lifetime upload.

How much does Scholarly cost compared to Perplexity?

Scholarly Premium is $30/mo or $144/yr with 10 weekly creation credits, and Laureate is $99/mo with 80. Teams are $35/seat/mo for Premium Teams and $110/seat/mo for Laureate Teams, self-serve for 1-29 seats. Perplexity sells Pro, a student-verified Education Pro, and Max tiers; see Perplexity's pricing page for current rates. Scholarly costs more than Pro because every plan bundles source-grounded chat plus artifact generation from your documents.

Does Scholarly work for teams and larger organizations?

Yes. Scholarly Teams is self-serve for 1-29 seats with a shared source library, Owner/Admin/Member roles, per-team model controls, activity reporting, and one Stripe bill. Trials start with 3 seats and invitations enabled, so an L&D or enablement team can upload company documents and share the training built from them on day one. For larger organizations, contact us about Enterprise.

Your questions, answered

Is Scholarly free to use?

Yes! The free plan includes core study tools with lifetime allowances: 3 AI Chat messages, 500 autocomplete words, 5 quiz questions, 15 voice minutes, 1 practice exam, one free AI Creation Credit total, and 1 file upload. These allowances do not reset. Upgrade to Premium for 10 AI Creation Credits per week and unlimited uploads.

What uses my free AI Creation Credits?

AI Creation Credits are shared across flashcards, podcasts, videos, slides, AI Documents, Deep Research, and the Transcribe tool. The selected model determines the credit cost. Recording live audio and saving its transcript uses your file upload allowance instead; it does not use AI Creation Credits.

Can I cancel anytime?

Absolutely. There are no contracts or commitments. You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account settings, and you'll keep access until the end of your billing period.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit and debit cards through Stripe. Pricing is displayed in USD by default, but local currency is available in the app.

Can I use Scholarly with a class or school?

Yes. For a school or organization-wide rollout, contact us at hello@scholarly.so and we'll help you find the right setup.

What happens when I hit a free plan limit?

You'll see a prompt to upgrade. Your existing work is never lost — limits only apply to new actions. Free-plan allowances are lifetime credits and do not reset. Premium includes 10 AI Creation Credits per week, podcasts up to 60 minutes, video lectures up to 45 minutes, unlimited uploads, chat, autocomplete, quizzes, and exams, plus more daily voice time.
