Guide Image Generation

AI Image Generation

Scholarly's AI can create and edit images directly inside any chat conversation. Ask for diagrams, illustrations, concept art, flashcard covers, or anything else visual — and the AI generates it on the spot.

Generating an Image

Type a description of what you want in chat. The AI decides when an image would be helpful and generates one automatically, or you can ask directly:

  • "Draw a diagram of the water cycle"
  • "Create an illustration of a neuron firing"
  • "Make a cover image for my biology flashcards"

Generated images appear inline in the conversation. Click any image to view it full-size.

Editing an Existing Image

Upload an image into chat (or reference one the AI already generated) and describe what you want changed. The AI edits the image based on your instructions:

  • "Make the background white"
  • "Add labels to each part of the diagram"
  • "Change the color scheme to grayscale"

You can also combine up to 16 reference images in a single editing request. This is useful for blending styles, merging diagrams, or creating composite visuals from multiple sources.

What You Can Create

The AI handles a wide range of visual content:

  • Diagrams — Flowcharts, process diagrams, system architectures
  • Scientific illustrations — Cell structures, chemical bonds, anatomical drawings
  • Charts and graphs — When you need a visual that goes beyond code-generated plots
  • Concept art — Visual representations of abstract ideas
  • Cover images — Thumbnails for flashcard decks, pages, or presentations
  • Study aids — Labeled diagrams, visual mnemonics, comparison charts

Image Quality

Images are generated using a state-of-the-art model that produces high-quality results with accurate text rendering, clean lines, and realistic shading when appropriate. The AI automatically chooses the best aspect ratio for the content — landscape for wide diagrams, portrait for tall illustrations, or square for icons and covers.

Using Generated Images

Once an image is generated, you can:

  • Download it — Right-click or use the download button.
  • Edit it further — Send a follow-up message describing changes.
  • Use it in flashcards — Add AI-generated images to any flashcard.
  • Reference it in conversation — The AI remembers images it created and can discuss or modify them later.

Tips

  • Be specific about what you want. "A labeled diagram of the heart with all four chambers, valves, and blood flow arrows" produces better results than "draw a heart."
  • If the first result is not quite right, describe what to change rather than starting over. The AI iterates on previous images.
  • For flashcard images, mention the style you want: Realistic, Cartoon, or Sketch.
  • Combine reference images when you want to merge elements from different sources into one visual.
