What are the best free AI study tools?

Scholarly's free AI study tools cover flashcards, practice quizzes, study notes, PDF summaries, podcasts, slide decks, and video lectures — all generated from your own PDFs, notes, lectures, or YouTube links. A free account includes one lifetime file upload and one shared lifetime AI creation; those credits do not reset. No credit card is required.

Every tool works from material you bring: upload a PDF, paste notes, record a lecture, or drop a YouTube link, then reuse that one source across formats. Free accounts generate from the first 32 pages of a PDF; paid plans support unlimited uploads and PDFs up to 1,000 pages. Current as of July 2026.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are Scholarly's AI study tools really free?

Yes. The free plan covers AI flashcards, study notes, AI Chat, practice quizzes, and PDF summaries. It also includes one shared lifetime AI creation across Scholarly. That credit does not reset, and daily chat and quiz-practice limits apply. Premium adds ongoing creation, longer PDFs, and more models.

Which AI models do Scholarly's tools use?

Scholarly runs on advanced models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and xAI, including Gemini 3.6 Flash and Grok 4.5. Paid users can switch plan-available models manually inside AI Chat, while Enterprise adds GPT 5.6 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.

Do I have to install different apps for each tool?

No. All 19 AI study tools live inside one Scholarly account. Sign up once and access everything from your browser on a laptop, tablet, or phone. There's nothing to download or install.

What makes Scholarly's AI study tools better than ChatGPT or NotebookLM?

Scholarly focuses on learning workflows. Its tools connect active recall, spaced repetition, flashcards, schedules, recordings, and video. ChatGPT and NotebookLM provide broader general-purpose AI. Paid Scholarly plans also export to Anki, Quizlet, and PDF.

Can I use Scholarly on my phone?

Yes. Scholarly runs in any mobile browser on iPhone and Android with full access to every AI study tool. Decks, notes, and study progress sync across devices automatically.

Can I export my flashcards and notes?

Yes. On paid plans, flashcards export as Anki .apkg files, Quizlet-compatible CSVs, or PDFs, and can be downloaded or printed; study notes export as Markdown or PDF. Sharing anything with a link is free.

How accurate is the AI?

Scholarly uses advanced models that are highly accurate on academic content, but every AI tool can make mistakes. Always review AI-generated flashcards, notes, and answers — use them as a study aid alongside your textbooks and lectures, not a replacement.

What can I upload to generate study material?

PDFs, lecture slides (PPTX), Word documents, images of handwritten notes, YouTube URLs, websites, and pasted text. Free accounts include one file upload to try it out and generate flashcards from the first 32 pages of a PDF; paid plans support unlimited uploads and PDFs up to 1,000 pages.

Can Scholarly turn my notes into slides, podcasts, or a video lecture?

Yes. A PDF, your notes, or a topic can become a presentation-ready PDF deck, a three-speaker podcast, or a narrated video lecture. Pick the format that fits your work. Every result stays connected to the original material.

Can Scholarly record and transcribe my lectures?

Yes. The AI Lecture Recorder captures a live class or plays back an uploaded recording, then produces a clean, searchable transcript (Lecture Transcription) plus structured notes (Audio to Notes) and auto-generated flashcards for each section — so a single lecture turns into a full study set you can review and quiz yourself on.
