Freestyle · Video Mode

The adaptive AI explainer video generator that picks the style for you

Upload notes, a PDF, or a document and Scholarly reads the material, then decides whether kinetic type, a whiteboard, a clean diagram sequence, or something in between will teach it best — no fixed look, no template.

Style chosen for your source

Source

Supply-chain onboarding deck, 24 slides

A process with four hand-offs, two exception paths, and a glossary of terms.

  • Kinetic type

Strong for definitions and short, quotable ideas — not a multi-step process.

  • Whiteboard

Good for derivations built up one line at a time.

  • Clean diagram sequence

Each hand-off becomes a labelled step; exception paths branch off visibly.

    Chosen
How it works

From source to video in three steps

Pick the Freestyle mode in the video lecture creator. Everything else is the same upload-and-generate flow.

  1. 01

    Add your source

Upload up to 3 PDFs, or use notes, documents, and files already in your Scholarly library. Any subject works — this mode is not tied to one kind of material.

  2. 02

The AI reads it and chooses a style

Instead of applying a fixed look, Scholarly studies the material and decides which visual style and animation approach serves the topic, then writes the teaching script around that choice.

  3. 03

    Watch and keep studying

In about 10 to 25 minutes you get a narrated, chaptered video with a searchable transcript, captions, question checkpoints, AI chat, and one-click flashcards.

What you get

Any style, one coherent lesson

Freestyle is free in style, not in structure. The visuals adapt; the lesson still follows one clear teaching arc from start to finish.

Style chosen per source

Kinetic type, whiteboard, a clean diagram sequence, or something in between — the AI picks whichever fits your material rather than forcing every topic through the same template.

No named mode required

When Standard, Illustrated, Short, or Manim Math Animation does not feel quite right for the material, Freestyle is the mode to reach for.

Grounded in your material

The script and visuals come from the files and notes you add, not the open internet, so the video matches what you are actually studying or teaching.

Chapters, transcript, and captions

Every video ships with chapter navigation, a searchable transcript, and synced captions, regardless of the style the AI chose.

Checkpoints and AI chat

Interactive question checkpoints test you as you watch, and AI chat answers follow-up questions about the video without leaving the page.

Flashcards in one click

Turn the video into flashcards instantly, or keep going with quizzes and study guides from the same source.

Why it helps

Not every topic wants the same kind of video

Updated August 2026

Upload up to 3 PDFs or notes and choose the Freestyle video mode. Scholarly reads the source and selects the visual style and animation approach that fits it — kinetic type, whiteboard, a clean diagram sequence, or a blend — then renders a narrated, chaptered video with transcript, captions, checkpoints, AI chat, and flashcards in about 10 to 25 minutes. The Free plan includes one lifetime AI creation at 720p with a fixed 2-minute length; paid plans add 1080p, watermark removal, MP4 download, and a target length up to 45 minutes.

A glossary of legal terms, a four-stage manufacturing process, and a chapter on cognitive biases are not the same kind of material, and a single fixed visual treatment serves at most one of them well. Freestyle starts from the content and works outward to the look, rather than the other way around.

That freedom applies to style only. Every Freestyle lecture still follows one coherent, linear teaching arc: it sets up the topic, builds the ideas in order, and closes with what you should now be able to do. The narration is grounded in your source, so what it says matches what your notes say.

If a lecture does not land the way you hoped, switching modes and regenerating is often a bigger improvement than rewording the prompt. Freestyle is the natural place to try when the named modes have not fit — and because the same study tools come with every mode, nothing is lost by experimenting.

For work and teams

Product explainers, internal training, and process walkthroughs rarely fit one house style — a pricing change, a new support workflow, and a security refresher each want a different treatment. Freestyle chooses it per document. Pair it with the training video generator for a structured curriculum, or see Scholarly for Teams for shared workspaces and pooled credits.

FAQ

Common questions

What does Freestyle actually decide?

The visual style and animation approach. After reading your source, the AI chooses between treatments such as kinetic type, a whiteboard, a clean diagram sequence, or a blend of them, and builds the lesson around that choice. The structure of the lesson — one clear linear teaching arc — stays the same.

How is Freestyle different from Standard?

Standard is the default polished, editorial lesson that picks a visual treatment concept by concept within an established look. Freestyle drops the fixed look entirely and lets the AI decide the overall style for your specific material. Pick Standard when you want a reliable all-rounder; pick Freestyle when none of the named modes feels right.

Can I tell it which style to use?

Freestyle is designed to choose for you based on the source. If you already know you want a specific treatment, a named mode is the better fit: Illustrated for hand-drawn storytelling, Short for a 30-second vertical recap, or Manim Math Animation for precise animated derivations. Every mode is available on every plan.

What can I upload?

Up to 3 PDFs — slide decks, reports, chapters, handouts — or notes and files already in your Scholarly library. On the Free plan, a single upload is limited to 8MB or 32 PDF pages.

Is it free?

Yes to start. The Free plan includes one lifetime AI creation at 720p with a fixed 2-minute length. Premium ($30/mo or $144/yr) includes 10 AI creations per week; Laureate ($99/mo) includes 80 per week. Paid plans add 1080p, watermark removal, MP4 download, and a target length up to 45 minutes.

How long does it take?

Usually about 10 to 25 minutes, depending on the length of the source. The video lands in your library when it is ready, with chapters, transcript, captions, checkpoints, AI chat, and flashcards generated alongside it.
