TOEFL iBT scores are available in your ETS account 3 days after your test date, for both the test center and Home Edition. That is the figure on ETS's official "Getting Your Scores" page as of September 1, 2026, and it matches the "72 hours or less" promise ETS made when the redesigned test launched on January 21, 2026. ETS shows the exact expected release date on screen at the end of your test and emails you when the scores post. Older guides, and some ETS regional pages, still quote a 4-8 day window, so treat 3 days as the current target and 4-8 days as the outer bound if your score is taking longer than expected.

The official 2026 TOEFL score timeline

There is no calendar of TOEFL release dates the way there is for the SAT or MCAT, because the test runs several days a week all year. Instead, ETS publishes a turnaround for each step:

What When Where
Unofficial Reading and Listening scores At the end of the test On screen
Official scores, all four sections and overall 3 days after your test date ETS account, with an email
Downloadable PDF score report 24-48 hours after your scores post ETS account
Paper copy of your report (if ordered) 11-15 days after your test date By mail
Reports to institutions, ETS Data Manager 4-8 business days Electronic
Reports to institutions, server feed 8-10 business days Electronic
Reports to institutions, postal mail 10-12 business days plus 7-10 days (US) or 4-6 weeks (international) Mail
Express shipping of a paper report 2-5 business days after scores are confirmed, 75 countries, fee applies Mail

Two points worth flagging:

  • Home Edition uses the same 3-day figure. ETS does not publish a separate timeline for at-home testing; scores land in the same ETS account on the same schedule.
  • The Paper Edition is gone. ETS stopped offering the TOEFL iBT Paper Edition after January 20, 2024. Those scores were valid for two years, so the last of them expired in January 2026. A test center or Home Edition test is the only path to a current score.

How to check your TOEFL score

Scores are delivered only through your ETS account, the one you used to register.

  1. Watch for the ETS email saying your scores are ready. It usually arrives on the expected date shown at the end of your test.
  2. Sign in to your ETS account and open the TOEFL iBT scores section. You will see four section scores (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) and an overall score on the 1-6 scale, plus your CEFR level and, during the transition period, a comparable score on the old 0-120 scale.
  3. Come back 24-48 hours later to download the PDF if an application portal or employer needs a copy.

What to do if your score is late or missing

A blank scores page a few days after the expected date is usually a delay, not a lost score. Work through these in order:

  • Check the expected date, not the calendar. The date shown at the end of your test is the one that counts. If your session ran late in the day, "3 days" can mean the fourth calendar day.
  • Allow the outer window. ETS regional pages still quote 4-8 days. Inside that range, wait before contacting support.
  • Read any notice in your account. If ETS has posted a message about your scores, follow the instructions there before contacting support.
  • Confirm you are in the right account. Sign in with the email you used at registration, not a second account or one an agent created.
  • Contact ETS TOEFL support through your account if the 8-day mark passes with nothing posted, or sooner if you have a deadline.

One rule to know before you test: designating score recipients in advance removes your right to a score review of Speaking or Writing. Reviews are available up to 30 days after the test, for a fee, for those two sections only.

What your 2026 TOEFL score means

The TOEFL changed on January 21, 2026, so this year's score looks different from the one in older admissions guides.

  • Each section is scored 1 to 6 in half-point steps. Reading and Listening are now multistage adaptive: the second half of each section adjusts to how you did in the first.
  • The overall score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band. A 5.25 average becomes 5.5; a 5.125 average becomes 5.
  • Each band maps to a CEFR level. ETS puts 6 at C2, 5 to 5.5 at C1, 4 to 4.5 at B2, 3 to 3.5 at B1, 2 to 2.5 at A2, and 1 to 1.5 at A1.
  • You also get a comparable 0-120 score until January 2028. During the two-year transition, reports show a midpoint equivalent on the old scale. ETS's published concordance gives a 5 as roughly 95-106 on the old scale, 4.5 as 86 and up, 4 as 72 and up, and 3.5 as 58 and up.
  • Scores are valid for 2 years from the test date.

MyBest scores

Every score report also carries MyBest scores, ETS's name for a superscore. MyBest takes your highest score in each section from all valid tests in the last two years and combines them. If you tested on the 0-120 scale in 2025 and retest in 2026, ETS converts the older section scores to the 1-6 scale first. Whether an institution accepts MyBest or requires a single test date is up to that institution, so check before you count on it.

Score sends and what happens next

  • Four free score reports are included in your test fee. You choose recipients when you register and can change them until 10 p.m. local test center time the day before your test.
  • Additional reports cost US$25 per institution, ordered from your ETS account after release.
  • Electronic delivery to institutions takes 4-8 business days through ETS Data Manager, longer for server feeds and mail. A university cannot see your score before you do, so add the delivery window to the 3-day release when you plan around a deadline.
  • Cancelled scores can be reinstated through your account within 60 days of the test date, for a fee.

If the score is below what your program asks for, the 3-day turnaround means you can see one result before booking a retake. Look at the section breakdown first; a single weak section is the fastest to move with targeted practice.

Prepare for the next step with your own materials

  • Put your expected score date, any retake date, and your application deadlines into the free AI calendar generator. It turns them into an .ics file for Google or Apple Calendar so the 3-day window and the score-send lag do not sneak up on you.
  • If you are retaking, use the study schedule generator to spread Speaking and Writing practice across the weeks you have, and the practice test generator to build timed questions from the academic articles, lecture transcripts, or prep chapters you are actually reading.
  • Vocabulary from those same sources goes into the flashcard maker, which schedules reviews with the SM-2 spaced repetition algorithm so words come back right before you would forget them.

Scholarly is built around that idea: you bring the sources, and it makes flashcards, quizzes, study guides, and an AI chat grounded in them. FAQ

How long does the TOEFL take to give results?

ETS posts official TOEFL iBT scores to your ETS account 3 days after your test date. Some regional ETS pages still show 4-8 days, so treat that as the outer bound.

What time of day are TOEFL scores released?

ETS publishes a date, not a time. Scores post on the expected date shown at the end of your test, and ETS emails you when they are there. Check the account directly rather than waiting for the email.

Are Home Edition scores slower than test center scores?

ETS publishes one figure, 3 days, and does not list a separate Home Edition timeline; both deliver to the same ETS account. Delivery to institutions runs on the same business-day schedule wherever you tested.

Can I still take the TOEFL Paper Edition?

No. ETS discontinued it after January 20, 2024, and those scores expired after two years, so none are current in 2026. Your options are a test center or the Home Edition.

How long are TOEFL scores valid?

Two years from the test date. A 2026 score on the 1-6 scale stays valid until the same date in 2028. Separately, ETS stops adding the comparable 0-120 score to reports in January 2028.
