How Long Do IELTS Results Take in 2026?

IELTS on paper results are released 13 days after the test, IELTS on computer results usually arrive within 1 to 5 days, and IELTS Online results take 6 to 8 days. Those are the figures on the official ielts.org results pages as of September 1, 2026, and the IDP and British Council pages match them. IELTS has no published calendar of release dates, because tests run on many dates every month in every country. Your release date is your test date plus the turnaround for your format.

Three things to know before you refresh the portal every hour:

• Paper results are the most predictable. IDP states that IELTS on paper results go live at 12:00 am GMT on the 13th day after the test. Sit a paper test on Saturday, September 5, 2026, and the 13th day is Friday, September 18. India is the one published exception: the ielts.org fast-results page lists a 7-day paper turnaround there.
• Computer results are fast but not fixed. The ielts.org fast-results page says about half of computer results are ready within 1 day and 80% within 2 days, but 3 to 5 days is still inside the official window. Day 4 with nothing is not late yet.
• IELTS Online is slower than the computer test at a centre. There is no paper Test Report Form for IELTS Online; institutions receive an eTRF and verify it through the IELTS Results Service.

How to check your IELTS results

Results appear online first, and the Test Report Form follows.

1. Watch for the email. If you booked through the British Council, you receive an email with a link to view your scores, and some centres also send an SMS preview alert. IDP results appear in your portal.
2. Log in to the portal for your provider. British Council bookings use the Test Taker Portal. IDP puts computer-based results in your booking portal and paper-based results in the IELTS results portal.3. Download the eTRF. For computer-based tests the electronic Test Report Form is usually in the portal within 1 to 2 days, according to the British Council. Institutions can verify it, so many applications never need the paper copy.
3. Collect or receive the paper TRF. You get one personal copy. Your centre can send additional copies directly to institutions, but not to you. Results are posted to up to five organisations free of charge, and electronic delivery through the IELTS Results Service is unlimited.

What to do if your results are late or missing

A blank portal on the expected day usually means one of four things:

• You are counting from the wrong day. The clock starts on the test date, and the paper release is at midnight GMT, so the "13th day" lands on a different local date depending on your time zone.
• You are in the wrong portal. IDP and the British Council run separate systems, and IDP separates computer and paper results. Use the link in your booking email.
• Your details do not match. The portal matches the ID details you gave at booking. A mistyped passport number is a common cause of "no results found."
• Your result is being held. Some results are withheld for checks. The official pages give no fixed time for these reviews, and only your test centre can see the status.

Past the outer edge of the window (day 5 for computer, day 8 for IELTS Online, day 13 for paper), contact your test centre with your candidate number. Do not book a new test in a panic; a second sitting means a second fee.

What your band score means and what happens next

IELTS reports Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking on a 0 to 9 scale in whole and half bands, plus an overall band score, which is the average of the four rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band, so 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.0. The IELTS partners recommend treating results as valid for two years from the test date. Check the exact requirement for your programme or visa route, because "IELTS 7.0" usually comes with a minimum in each section.

If you fell short, you have three official routes:

• Enquiry on Results (EOR). A re-mark of one or more sections by a senior examiner. Apply within six weeks of the test date through your test centre. There is a fee, refunded if any band score goes up, and scores cannot go down. IDP says outcomes arrive between 2 hours and 21 days after you apply. An EOR makes most sense when you missed a threshold by half a band.
• One Skill Retake. If your full test was IELTS on computer, you can re-sit one of the four skills, once per original test, within 60 days of the original test date. Results come within 3 to 5 days on a new Test Report Form that combines the retaken skill with your original three, and you choose which TRF to submit. Acceptance is not universal, so confirm with the receiving organisation first.
• A full retake. Book it when your preparation, not the calendar, says you are ready.
