AI video generator

The AI video generator that teaches from your own material

Give Scholarly a PDF, a slide deck, your notes, a web page or a YouTube link, or just name a topic. It plans the lesson, writes and narrates the script, and renders a chaptered video with captions.

Quick answer

Is there a free AI video generator that works from my documents?

Yes. Scholarly generates explainer and lecture videos from material you supply: it reads the source, decides what to teach and in what order, narrates a script in the voice you choose, and builds animated scenes with diagrams, charts and on-screen text. Without a credit card, the Free plan gets you one roughly 2-minute video in 720p. Paid plans raise that to 45 minutes at 1080p and add MP4 download.

  • What it makes: A narrated 16:9 video split into chapters, with switchable captions, a searchable transcript and optional question checkpoints. The Short design renders a vertical 9:16 clip instead.
  • What you can start from: PDFs, Word files, PowerPoint decks, pasted text or notes, images, web pages, YouTube links and audio recordings, or a topic typed as a prompt. Free uses one source per video; Premium combines up to 10 and Laureate up to 20.
  • Designs: Standard (calm, editorial scenes with animated diagrams), Short (vertical), Illustrated (hand-drawn doodles), Manim Math Animation (derivations built step by step) and Freestyle (the AI chooses the look and the tools).
  • Free plan: A single lifetime AI Creation Credit that every Scholarly tool draws on, plus one upload capped at 8 MB (only the first 32 pages of a PDF are read). Used for a video, it buys one clip of roughly 2 minutes in 720p carrying Scholarly branding, which you can watch and share by link. MP4 download is not included.
  • Paid plans: Premium ($30 a month or $144 a year) gives 15 AI Creation Credits each week, lengths up to 45 minutes, 1080p, and MP4 files without the logo. Going past 15 minutes adds 1 credit to a video, past 30 minutes 2. Laureate is $99 a month with 80 credits a week.

Best for turning something you already have, such as a chapter, a policy, a product brief or a lesson plan, into a video people can learn from. Not for cinematic footage, ads or a talking-head presenter: it draws explainer scenes, it does not film people.

Add a source or a topic

Upload a file, paste text or a link, or describe what the video should explain. On a paid plan, several files can feed one video.

Choose design, language and voice

Pick one of the five designs, the output language and a narrator. Free videos are fixed at about 2 minutes; paid plans set a target of up to 45.

Watch, share or download

Rendering runs on Scholarly's servers. When it is done, jump between chapters, turn captions on, send a view link, or, on a paid plan, save the MP4.

What people turn into video

Course and lesson videos

Instructors turn readings and slide decks into narrated lessons with chapters learners can jump between.

Training and onboarding

Teams turn SOPs, policies and product docs into videos that use the document's own steps and terms.

Study walkthroughs

Learners get a dense paper or chapter explained first, then drill it with flashcards or a quiz.

Vertical explainers

The Short design pulls one idea from your material into a captioned 9:16 clip.

Goes in

Your files and links, or a topic. When you attach a source, the script is written from it.

Comes out

An explainer video with narration, chapters, captions and a transcript, plus a view link; MP4 on paid plans.

Not a fit for

Photoreal or cinematic shots, live-action scenes and on-screen avatar presenters.

Three kinds of AI video generator, and which one this is

The phrase covers tools that do very different jobs. Prompt-to-footage models such as Sora, Veo and Runway synthesize photoreal or stylized clips from a description, which suits mood shots, b-roll and creative experiments. Avatar platforms such as HeyGen and Synthesia put a digital presenter on screen to read a script you wrote. Scholarly is a third kind: an explainer generator. It works out what your material is trying to teach, writes the narration, and draws the scenes that make each point clear. If you need a cinematic shot or a spokesperson, the first two kinds are built for that; if you need someone to understand a document, this is.

Why the source comes first

A video written from your own file keeps your terminology, your numbers and your order of steps, which matters when the topic is a regulation, a lab method or an internal process rather than general knowledge. You can still start from a typed topic, and the AI then plans the lesson from general knowledge, but attaching the PDF, deck or notes is what keeps the script tied to what you actually need covered. Several sources can be combined into one video on a paid plan, so a policy and the procedure that implements it can become one lesson.

Picking a design

Standard is the default and the safest choice for most material: clean editorial scenes, animated diagrams and charts, and figures cut from your pages where they help. It is also the only design that can add a companion slide deck and a dark theme. Illustrated draws each scene as a hand-drawn doodle, which works well for concepts and stories. Manim Math Animation builds equations and proofs line by line. Short makes a vertical clip for phones and social feeds. Freestyle hands the visual decisions to the AI when none of the fixed looks fit.

Length, language and quality

Free videos always come out at roughly 2 minutes in 720p. Premium and Laureate let you aim for anything up to 45 minutes; the lesson is structured around that target, so a long source earns extra chapters instead of rushed narration, while Short sticks to its own format. Narration, on-screen text and captions follow the output language you pick, from more than 70 languages and regional variants, and your source does not have to be in the same language. Paid plans render at up to 1080p.

Check it before it goes out

The script is AI-written, so treat the first render as a draft. Watch it once with the transcript open and check names, figures and anything safety-critical against your source. If something is off, regenerate with clearer instructions or a narrower source rather than shipping a video your audience will trust more than it deserves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free AI video generator?

Scholarly has a free plan with no credit card. Its one lifetime AI Creation Credit can go on a video: about 2 minutes long, 720p, narrated, carrying Scholarly branding, and viewable or shareable by link. The catch: that credit is shared with every other Scholarly tool, the length is fixed, and MP4 download is paid.

Can AI make a video from a PDF?

Yes. Upload the PDF and Scholarly reads the text and figures, works out the teaching order, writes narration from those pages, and renders scenes that explain them, reusing figures from the file where they help. On Free, PDFs up to 8 MB are read to 32 pages; Premium reads up to 1,000 pages and Laureate up to 3,000.

How long can the videos be?

Free videos are about 2 minutes. Premium and Laureate let you set a target before you generate, anywhere up to 45 minutes. With the default model a video is 1 AI Creation Credit; going past 15 minutes adds 1 credit and past 30 minutes adds 2. The vertical Short design has its own fixed length.

Does it have AI avatars or a talking presenter?

No. Every video is narrated by an AI voice over animated scenes, and nobody appears on camera. If you specifically need a digital presenter reading your script, avatar platforms such as HeyGen or Synthesia are built for that. Scholarly is for explaining material clearly rather than putting a face on it.

Can I download the video as an MP4?

On Premium and Laureate, yes. Turn the Scholarly logo off when you generate and the MP4 has no watermark; the export pack also bundles the script and caption files, plus the companion slide PDF for Standard videos. Free accounts can watch in Scholarly and pass around a view link, but cannot download the file.

What languages can the video be in?

You pick the output language from more than 70 languages and regional variants, and the narration, on-screen text, captions and transcript all follow it. The source can be in a different language, so an English report can become a Spanish or Japanese video. Arabic and Hebrew videos lay text out right to left.

How is it different from Sora, Veo, Runway or HeyGen?

Sora, Veo and Runway generate footage from a prompt, so they are the right tools for cinematic or photoreal clips. HeyGen generates an avatar who speaks your script. Scholarly does neither: it turns a document, deck or topic into a narrated explainer with diagrams, chapters, captions and a transcript, written from your source. Pick by the job: footage, presenter, or explanation.

Can I make a video from just a prompt, without a file?

Yes. Type the topic and what the video should cover, and the AI plans the lesson from general knowledge. For anything where accuracy matters, such as a company process or a specific syllabus, attach the source so the script follows it instead of the open web.

How many videos can I make on a paid plan?

Each week Premium comes with 15 AI Creation Credits and Laureate with 80, and every creation tool spends from that same balance. A video uses 1 credit with the default model, more with a premium model or a length above 15 minutes, so a Premium week covers up to 15 shorter videos.

Can I use the videos for work training or a course?

Yes. A view link plays in any browser with chapters, captions and the transcript; on a paid plan you can also take the MP4 and put it wherever your team or learners already watch video. For a group, Scholarly for Teams adds shared source libraries, Owner, Admin and Member roles, and a single bill covering every seat.
