Pin Messages in Chat: Keep What Matters in Reach
Pin answers and your own messages in Scholarly chat, find them in a bar at the top of the thread, and let chat offer to pin the things you will need again.

A long chat collects the things you actually came for: the revision plan for your final, the exam date and room, the formula you keep forgetting, the decision your team agreed on halfway through a contract review. Then the thread keeps going, and twenty messages later you are scrolling up looking for them.
Starting today you can pin messages in Scholarly chat. A pinned message stays one tap away in a bar at the top of the chat, however long the thread gets.
Pin Any Message
You can pin a finished answer or one of your own messages.
- On a computer, hover over the message and press the Pin button in its row of actions, next to Reply. You can also right-click the message and choose Pin.
- On a phone, press and hold the message and choose Pin.
A pinned message shows a small "Pinned" label so you can spot it as you scroll. Press the button again, or choose Unpin, to remove it.
The Pin Bar
Once a chat has a pin, a slim bar appears above the conversation. It shows your newest pin, and "Pinned · 2 of 3" when there is more than one.
- Tap the bar to jump to that message. The chat scrolls to it and highlights it for a moment, even if it is far back in the thread. Tap again and the bar moves to the pin before it, so a few taps walk you through all of them.
- Open the list with the button on the right of the bar to see every pin at once: who wrote it, its title, and the start of the message. Tap one to jump to it, or unpin it from there.
On a phone the list opens as a sheet from the bottom of the screen.
Chat Can Pin for You
You do not have to find the message yourself. Ask:
- "Pin the study plan."
- "Pin a one-line summary of mitosis vs meiosis."
- "Unpin the old deadline."
Chat pins the message with a short title, like "Biology final: Tue 12 Nov, 9am, Hall B", so the bar reads clearly at a glance.
Chat also notices when something is worth keeping. If you mention a deadline, an exam date, a plan, or a key fact you will need again, chat may add a small "Pin this for later?" card under its answer. One tap pins it. Nothing is pinned until you tap, and taking the suggestion does not send another message or use your chat allowance. Chat offers this at most once per answer and not for routine replies.
Chat can also see the titles of what is already pinned, so it will not offer to pin the same thing twice.
Where It Helps
Studying for an exam. Pin the exam details you gave chat on day one and the revision plan it wrote back. Two weeks of questions later, both are still at the top.
Working through a long document. Reviewing a supplier agreement with chat? Pin the answer that lists the termination terms and the one with the payment schedule, and jump between them while you keep asking questions.
Keeping a decision visible. When a long chat lands on an answer you want to keep, pin it so the outcome does not get buried under the discussion that led to it.
Limits
- Up to 20 pins per chat. Unpin one to pin another.
- Finished answers and your own messages. An answer that is still being written can be pinned once it is done.
- Pins belong to one chat. They are not shown in a shared link to the chat, and an edited version of a chat starts without pins.
Pinning is part of chat on every plan. See Plans and Limits for what your plan includes.
How to Try It
- Open Scholarly and continue a chat that already has a few answers.
- Hover over an answer you want to keep (or press and hold it on a phone) and choose Pin.
- Scroll away, then tap the pin bar at the top to jump back.
- Ask chat to pin something for you, like "pin the key dates from this chat".
