Google's newest Flash models are now live on Scholarly. Gemini 3.6 Flash is the new premium Google option for harder chat and creation work, while Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite is the new efficient model for lower-cost generation and high-volume utility tasks.

This update replaces Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite in the current model lineup. It does not remove Gemini 3 Flash Preview, which remains available for fast, source-grounded work.

The same catalog refresh reserves GPT 5.6 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5 for Enterprise workspaces. Their higher provider costs made them a poor fit for unlimited individual plans; Ultimate users keep the rest of the paid model catalog, including Gemini 3.6 Flash, Grok 4.5, and GPT 5.6 Terra.

What Is New in Gemini 3.6 Flash?

Gemini 3.6 Flash is built to complete multi-step work with fewer reasoning steps, tool calls, and output tokens. Its standard API pricing is $1.50 per million input tokens and $7.50 per million output tokens, below the $2 input and $12 output rates of Gemini 3.5 Flash.

On Scholarly, it replaces Gemini 3.5 Flash and is now selectable in every model-enabled workflow:

  • AI Chat for careful explanations, coding, source-heavy questions, and long conversations.
  • Deep Research when a report needs stronger planning and synthesis.
  • AI Slides for dense material that benefits from deliberate structure.
  • AI Video Lectures when the outline and narration need deliberate structure.
  • AI Infographics for source-grounded visual summaries.
  • Study guides, worksheets, and other supported AI creations when you want the premium Google model.

Gemini 3.6 Flash is available as a premium model choice on paid plans. Free users can still browse it in the model picker and see what an upgrade unlocks.

What Is New in Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite?

Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite is Google's new low-latency model for high-volume work, document parsing, structured data, and lightweight agent tasks. Its standard API pricing is $0.30 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output tokens.

In Scholarly, it replaces Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite as the efficient Google option. It is selectable in AI Chat, Deep Research, AI Slides, AI Video Lectures, AI Infographics, flashcards, study guides, worksheets, and the other supported creation tools. Behind the scenes, it powers efficient background work such as extraction, summaries, naming, and other small tasks that keep the workspace moving.

Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite is the flashcard default on every plan. The flashcard picker is intentionally limited to it and Gemini 3 Flash Preview, so deck generation stays focused and predictable.

Gemini 3 Flash Preview Is Staying

Gemini 3 Flash Preview is not being removed. It remains a free Google option in chat, research, slides, video lectures, and infographics, and the only selectable paid alternative for flashcards.

Use it when you want a fast, capable answer or creation without stepping up to the premium Gemini 3.6 Flash model.

What Happens to a Saved Older Model?

If you had Gemini 3.5 Flash or Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite saved in a model picker, Scholarly now resets that picker to the current default for your plan and feature.

We are intentionally not treating a removed model as permission to select a different replacement on your behalf. Available choices depend on the workflow; flashcards offer Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite and Gemini 3 Flash Preview only.

Historical chats and release notes keep their original model names so the record of what generated them stays accurate.

How to Try the New Models

  1. Open Scholarly and start a new chat or AI creation.
  2. Open the model picker.
  3. Choose Gemini 3.6 Flash for stronger premium work in supported workflows or Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite for efficient generation. Flashcards start on Flash Lite, with Gemini 3 Flash Preview as the only alternative.

The rest of the workflow stays the same: bring your PDFs, notes, recordings, and other sources, then turn them into grounded answers and study materials with the model that fits the task.
