Comparing tools for a whole team?

Scholarly Teams puts your team, class, lab, or company on one plan — every feature unlocked for every member, all built from your shared material.

Where Knowt Still Shines

Knowt is a great tool with real strengths worth acknowledging.

Genuinely Generous Free Tier

Knowt built its reputation on being free. Flashcards, notes, practice modes, and Quizlet import are all available without paying — which is why it spread so fast through high schools. If your only need is free flashcards, Knowt delivers.

Excellent Quizlet Import

When Quizlet started locking features behind paywalls, Knowt's one-click Quizlet set import gave students an easy escape hatch. It's still one of the smoothest ways to move existing sets across.

Simple and Approachable

Knowt keeps things light. There's not much to learn — make a set, study it, take a practice test. For a high-schooler who just wants flashcards fast, that simplicity is a real strength.

Why Students Switch to Scholarly

Deep AI Generation From Real Materials

Scholarly reads full PDFs, lecture slides, AI Meeting Notes, and audio files and builds complete flashcard decks, notes, and study guides from them. Knowt's AI features are lighter — Scholarly is built around turning your actual course material into study sets automatically.

Chat With Your Content

Upload a textbook chapter or lecture and ask it questions — Scholarly answers with citations to your sources. Knowt has no chat-with-your-material feature, so you can't interrogate your notes the way you can in Scholarly.

Podcasts and Video Overviews

Scholarly turns your material into podcast-style audio overviews and narrated video lectures, so you can revise on a walk or commute. Knowt doesn't generate audio or video study content.

Record and Transcribe Lectures

Hit record in class and Scholarly transcribes the lecture, then generates notes and flashcards from it. Knowt has no AI Meeting Notes capability.

Full Exams, Not Just Practice Tests

Scholarly generates full practice exams with mixed question types and grades your answers with feedback. Knowt has practice tests, but Scholarly's exam mode is closer to a real assessment.

A Complete Study Loop

Knowt is a flashcard tool. Scholarly is a study platform: AI creation, spaced repetition, exams, podcasts, video, mind maps, and research all in one place — so you never have to leave for the next step.

How Scholarly Works

Step 1: Add Your Content

Upload PDFs, paste notes, add images, or link YouTube videos. Any study material works.

Step 2: AI Builds Your Study Materials

Our AI reads your material and turns it into grounded answers, flashcards, quizzes, summaries, and more.

Step 3: Study Your Way

Review with spaced repetition, listen as a podcast, watch as a video lecture, or export to Anki, Quizlet, or PDF.

Scholarly vs Knowt: A Closer Look

Knowt earned its popularity honestly. It launched as a free alternative when Quizlet started charging for features students used to get for nothing, and its painless Quizlet import made switching easy. For a high-school student who wants free flashcards and a quick practice test, Knowt is a perfectly good answer.

Where Knowt stops is depth. Its AI features are lightweight, it can't chat with your uploaded material, and it doesn't generate podcasts, video overviews, or transcribe lectures. Once your studying gets more demanding — dense PDFs, AI Meeting Notes sources, real exam prep — you hit the edges of what Knowt was built to do.

Scholarly keeps the part Knowt got right — free flashcards and notes, easy imports, spaced repetition — and builds the rest of the study loop around it. Drop in a PDF or AI Meeting Notes and you get decks, notes, a study guide, a podcast, and a video overview. Then chat with the material, take a graded practice exam, and review with spaced repetition. Same starting point, a much bigger ceiling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Scholarly a Knowt alternative?

Yes. Scholarly does what Knowt's core does — free flashcards, notes, spaced repetition, practice tests, and Quizlet import — and adds deep AI generation from PDFs and lectures, chat-with-your-content, podcasts, video overviews, AI Meeting Notes, and full graded exams.

Is Scholarly free like Knowt?

Yes, Scholarly has a free plan that covers flashcards, notes, AI creation, and study guides for most students. Premium unlocks paid AI models, longer videos, deeper research, and higher generation limits. Knowt's free tier is also generous — both are usable without paying.

Can I import my Knowt or Quizlet sets into Scholarly?

Yes. Scholarly supports Quizlet import, and you can paste or upload notes and existing card sets. The AI can also expand or rebuild imported sets into fuller decks automatically.

Does Scholarly have practice tests like Knowt?

Yes, and more. Scholarly generates full practice exams with mixed question types and grades your answers with feedback, in addition to standard flashcard review with spaced repetition.

What can Scholarly do that Knowt can't?

Scholarly can chat with your uploaded material, generate podcast-style audio overviews and narrated video lectures, record and transcribe live lectures, run a deep research mode, and build full graded exams. Knowt focuses on flashcards, notes, and practice tests.

Is Knowt better for high-schoolers?

Knowt is popular with high-schoolers because it's simple and free, and that's a real strength. Scholarly works just as well for high school and adds more for harder courses — dense PDFs, AI Meeting Notes sources, and serious exam prep.

Can I use both Knowt and Scholarly?

Yes. Some students keep Knowt for quick free flashcard sets and use Scholarly for AI-generated study material, podcasts, and exam prep. There's no lock-in either way.
