Quick answer

How do you turn a document into audio?

Upload the document and Scholarly extracts its text, reads it aloud in a natural voice, and saves one MP3 to your library. It works with Word documents, PowerPoint decks, PDFs, text and Markdown files, spreadsheets, and saved web pages. Nothing is summarized: for a contract, a policy, or a procedure, the exact wording is the point, so the audio is the document itself rather than an interpretation of it.

Upload the document

Word, PowerPoint, PDF, text, or a file already sitting in your library. Combine up to five at once.

Choose how it reads

Pick a voice and a pace. The cost is quoted from the word count before anything runs.

Listen or share the file

Download the MP3, or keep it in your library with its transcript for reference.

What professionals convert

Reports and briefs

Get through the pre-read before the meeting instead of skimming it during.

Policies and SOPs

Procedures your team needs to actually know, in a format they will get through.

Contracts and filings

Long documents where the exact language matters and a summary will not do.

Training material

Onboarding docs turned into something new hires can listen to on day one.

Formats in

Word, PowerPoint, PDF, text, Markdown, spreadsheets, web pages

Format out

One MP3 per conversion, plus a time-synced transcript

Fidelity

The document read in full, in order, nothing rewritten

Sources per file

Up to five documents combined into one narration

Built for work documents

Most text-to-speech tools are built around pasting a paragraph. This is built around the documents work actually produces: a forty-page report, a deck with speaker notes, a policy nobody has read. Up to five sources can be combined into one narration, so a set of related documents becomes a single thing to listen to rather than five separate files.

The exact wording survives

For a contract, a regulation, or a procedure, a summary is worse than useless — it is confidently wrong about the details that matter. Scholarly reads the source as written. The only thing removed is formatting: markdown symbols, table pipes, and heading marks are stripped so the voice reads prose instead of punctuation.

It runs in the background

Start the conversion and close the tab. A long report takes a few minutes because the audio is synthesized in pieces and assembled into one file; Scholarly opens the finished audio when it is ready. You are charged one AI credit per 10,000 words, quoted before you commit and refunded automatically if the conversion fails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which document formats are supported?

Word documents, PowerPoint decks, PDFs, plain text and Markdown, spreadsheets, saved web pages, and anything already in your Scholarly library. You can also paste a URL and narrate the page behind it.

Can I combine several documents into one audio file?

Yes, up to five sources in a single narration. Each one after the first is announced by title so the audio does not run two documents together mid-sentence.

Does it read speaker notes in a slide deck?

It reads the text Scholarly can extract from the deck, which includes slide text. Decks that are mostly images have little to read — a document version narrates far better.

How long can a document be?

Up to 30,000 words per narration, about three hours of audio. Longer material can be split into more than one conversion.

Is the audio private?

The MP3 is saved to your own library like any other file you upload. Downloading and sharing it is your choice.
