CFP Exam Results Release Dates 2026
CFP exam results come by email about four weeks after each testing window closes. 2026 window dates, the diagnostic report, retake limits, and next steps.

You see a preliminary pass or fail right after you finish the CFP exam, and CFP Board emails your official results letter about four weeks after the testing window closes. For the October 29 to November 5, 2026 window, that puts official results around December 3, 2026. CFP Board's own wording ranges from "approximately 4 weeks" on its website to "approximately 4 to 6 weeks" in the October 2026 Exam Candidate Handbook, so the safe outer edge is December 17. Every candidate in a window gets results on the same cycle, no matter which day you tested.
CFP exam results release timing in 2026
The CFP exam runs three times a year in 8-day windows, delivered through Prometric. Results are tied to the close of the window, not your appointment date, so someone who tests on the first day waits longer than someone who tests on the last.
CFP Board does not publish a results date in advance. It does publish a results announcement for each window, and the last two came exactly four weeks after the window closed. The table below shows those announcement dates, then applies the official 4 to 6 week guidance to the upcoming windows. The future dates are our calculation from the handbook rule, not dates CFP Board has published.
| Testing window | Window closes | Results |
|---|---|---|
| November 3 to 12, 2025 | November 12, 2025 | Announced December 3, 2025 (64% pass rate) |
| March 17 to 24, 2026 | March 24, 2026 | Announced April 21, 2026 (67% pass rate) |
| July 14 to 21, 2026 | July 21, 2026 | Announced August 18, 2026 (66% pass rate) |
| October 29 to November 5, 2026 | November 5, 2026 | Expected December 3 to December 17, 2026 (calculated) |
| March 16 to 23, 2027 | March 23, 2027 | Expected April 20 to May 4, 2027 (calculated) |
| July 13 to 20, 2027 | July 20, 2027 | Expected August 17 to August 31, 2027 (calculated) |

How to check your CFP exam result
- Read the preliminary result at the end of the exam. CFP Board's scoring page says preliminary results are provided immediately after you take the exam, and the handbook adds that Prometric emails them to you shortly afterward.
- Watch for the official results letter. It arrives by email from CFP Board roughly four weeks after the window closes. Check spam, and make sure the email address in your CFP Board account is one you actually read.
- Do not call for it. CFP Board states it does not disclose official exam results over the phone, by text, or by fax.
- Report any exam-day problem quickly. If something went wrong at the test center, email examinations@cfpboard.org no later than 10 business days after the window closes.
What your score report shows
The CFP exam is pass or fail. It is criterion-referenced, meaning a cutoff score is set by CFP professionals through a formal Standard Setting process. Each of the 170 questions counts for one point, and CFP Board does not fix a pass rate in advance or publish a percentage you need to answer correctly.
What you receive depends on the outcome:
- If you pass, the letter gives instructions for your next steps toward CFP certification. There is no score.
- If you do not pass, you get a diagnostic report of your performance across the Principal Knowledge Topics, with indications of relative strengths and weaknesses. It is meant to show where to focus before a retake.
The questions map to eight principal knowledge domains, in these approximate weights from the handbook:
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Retirement Savings and Income Planning | 18% |
| Investment Planning | 17% |
| General Principles of Financial Planning | 15% |
| Tax Planning | 14% |
| Risk Management and Insurance Planning | 11% |
| Estate Planning | 10% |
| Professional Conduct and Regulation | 8% |
| Psychology of Financial Planning | 7% |
Weak results in retirement, investments, or general principles cost more points than the same weakness in psychology or professional conduct, so weight your review the way the exam does.
If you believe a failing result is wrong, you can request a re-score within 30 days of the final result release for a $150 fee, refunded if the result changes from fail to pass. CFP Board calls a change "highly unlikely," the re-score can take up to 30 days, and it comes with no further breakdown of your result. Exam questions are not available for review.
Retake rules if you did not pass
- Next window only. You must wait until the next testing window to retest, and you retake the entire exam.
- Full fee every time. You pay the exam fee for each retake. For the October 2026 window the tiers were $825 early, $925 standard, and $1,025 late. The exam page we checked lists fee tiers for that window only.
- Three attempts in 24 months. If you fail three times within a 24-month period, you must sit out three exam administrations before registering again.
- Five attempts for life. The lifetime maximum is five attempts. People who had attempted the exam four or five times before January 1, 2012 get two additional attempts.
If you are in the October 29 to November 5 window and do not pass, the next window is March 16 to 23, 2027. Registration for it opened October 21, 2026, and the education verification deadline is February 23, 2027.
After passing: experience, education, and ethics
Passing the exam does not make you a CFP professional on its own. Three more pieces remain.
- Experience. You need 6,000 hours of professional experience related to the financial planning process, or 4,000 hours on the apprenticeship pathway. It must fall within 10 years before or 5 years after you pass the exam, and you report it through the Experience Reporting Profile in the Certification Tracker.
- Education. Submit an official transcript showing a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited school. You did not need it to sit for the exam, but you do need it to become certified.
- Ethics. Complete the Application for CFP Certification, which contains the Ethics Declaration. CFP Board runs a background check and applies its Fitness Standards before telling you the ethics requirement is complete.
Studying for a retake from your own notes
The diagnostic report tells you which domains pulled you down. The fastest way to act on it is usually with material you already own: your review course outlines, the case-study notes you wrote, and the list of practice-exam misses.
- Upload those notes and outlines to Scholarly, then build a practice exam with the practice test generator aimed at your two or three weakest domains. Ask for case-style questions if the case sets were where you lost time.
- Turn the weakest domain into a narrated walkthrough with AI video lectures. Estate planning or tax material that felt dense on the page is often easier to follow when someone talks through it.
- For more on using AI with your own sources, see AI exam prep and our roundup of the best AI tools for certification exam prep.
A free Scholarly account includes one AI creation, enough to try this on your own material. Paid plans cover the rest.
FAQ
When will I get my CFP exam results for the October/November 2026 window?
CFP Board says official results arrive by email about four weeks after the window closes, with the handbook allowing up to six. The window closes November 5, 2026, so expect results between about December 3 and December 17.
Do I find out if I passed the CFP exam on test day?
Yes, a preliminary result. It appears right after you finish, and Prometric emails it to you shortly afterward. The official letter from CFP Board follows weeks later.
Do I get a score if I pass the CFP exam?
No. The exam is pass or fail. Passing candidates get instructions for the remaining certification steps, and only candidates who do not pass get a diagnostic report by knowledge domain.
How many times can I take the CFP exam?
Up to five times in your lifetime, and no more than three times in any 24-month period. Three failures within 24 months mean sitting out three administrations before you can register again.
Can I get my CFP exam rescored?
Yes, within 30 days of the final result release, for $150. The fee is refunded if your result changes from fail to pass, which CFP Board describes as highly unlikely.
