You see a PMP result the moment you finish the exam, on a test center computer or in an online proctored session, but PMI treats that on-screen result as preliminary. The official report goes up on PMI's online certification results system no later than 10 business days after your exam date, and PMI emails you when it is there. Paper-based testing, which PMI uses in mainland China, is slower: the score report arrives by email 6 to 8 weeks after the session.

PMP result timing in 2026

The rule comes from the PMI Certification Handbook (revised June 2026). On computer-based exams you receive a copy of the score report at the end of the session, with your overall pass/fail status and a rating for each domain. For the PMP specifically, PMI says any score given at the end of the session "is considered preliminary" until PMI notifies you that it is official.

There is no fixed release calendar, because the PMP runs year-round. The table below applies the 10-business-day limit to a few late-2026 test dates. It is a calculation, not a PMI schedule: it counts Monday to Friday only, and PMI does not say whether public holidays count, so treat dates in holiday weeks as rough.

How to check your PMP result

  1. Read the screen before you leave. The end-of-session report shows pass/fail and your domain ratings. Note them down.
  2. Watch for PMI's email. PMI sends a notice when the official report is available online. Check the inbox tied to your PMI account, including spam.
  3. Open the official report online. It sits on PMI's online certification results system once the email arrives. If you passed, sign in at certification.pmi.org and use "My Certification" then "View Certificate" to download your certificate.
  4. Paper-based candidates: expect the score report by email 6 to 8 weeks after the test.

PMI keeps results confidential. If an employer needs them, send PMI a written request naming which details (exam date, pass/fail status) it may release.

What your score report shows

PMI does not publish a numeric passing score. The handbook calls PMI exams "criteria-based": subject matter experts set how many questions a qualified candidate must answer correctly, and you are judged on the scored items only. On the 2026 exam that is 170 scored questions out of 180, with 10 unscored pretest items mixed in.

The report gives your overall result plus diagnostic information for each domain, and the handbook says this guidance is for both passing and failing candidates. PMI's own sample report uses four performance rating categories:

  • Above Target: performance exceeds the minimum requirements.
  • Target: performance meets the minimum requirements.
  • Below Target: slightly below target and fails to meet the minimum. Additional preparation is recommended before re-examination.
  • Needs Improvement: far below target and fails to meet the minimum. Additional preparation is strongly recommended.

The same four categories are applied to each domain. PMI's sample dates from 2017, when the exam used different domains, so expect today's report to rate the three current domains: People, Process, and Business Environment. PMI says the categories are there to show where you need more preparation, not for uses such as hiring decisions.

If you failed, the domain ratings are the useful part. A weak Business Environment rating matters more than it used to, since that domain is now about a quarter of the exam.

Retake rules if you did not pass

  • Three attempts per eligibility year. Once your application is approved, you have 1 year to pass and may take the exam up to three times. If your application was audited, the year starts the day PMI tells you that you passed the audit.
  • Fees apply again. PMI requires repayment of fees for the second and third attempts. The handbook says prices vary by membership status and region, and member rates apply only if you joined before paying. For reference, PMI's PMP page lists the first-attempt exam fee at $425 for members and $675 full price.
  • After a third failure. You must wait 1 year from your last exam date before reapplying for the PMP. You can apply for a different PMI certification during that year.
  • If the year runs out first. You must reapply, but there is no waiting period. Note that from December 1, 2026, live training hours count only if the course came from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider, or an eligible accredited academic program. Training finished before that date still qualifies.
  • Booking the retake. Rescheduling or cancelling within 30 days of an appointment costs US$70 plus taxes, and you cannot change an appointment within 48 hours of it.

The exam you retake is the 2026 version

PMI launched a new PMP Exam Content Outline on July 9, 2026, and every exam scheduled on or after that date uses it. If you sat the older exam and failed, your retake follows the new outline:

  • Domain weights: People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26% (previously 42%, 50%, and 8%).
  • Format: 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks. The first break comes after a case-study section, and you cannot return to earlier questions once you take it.
  • Question types: new case or scenario sets and graphic-based questions join multiple choice, matching, and the rest.
  • Approach mix: about 40% predictive, with the rest split between agile and hybrid.

PMI says the scoring method has not changed. The outline lists 26 tasks across the three domains; measure your weak areas against that list.

After you pass

Once PMI tells you the result is official, you can use the PMP designation. You can download a PDF certificate from certification.pmi.org, and Credly emails you a digital badge (use the same email address as your PMI account). PMI's online Certification Registry lists holders automatically for employers to verify (you can opt out in myPMI). Keeping the credential means earning 60 professional development units every 3 years and paying the renewal fee.

Studying for a retake from your own notes

Your score report already names the domains to fix, and you likely have prep-course notes or slides in a folder. Start there.

  • Upload those notes, along with the 2026 Exam Content Outline PDF, to Scholarly.
  • Build a practice exam with the practice test generator, pointed at the domain where you scored Below Target or Needs Improvement. Scenario-style questions from your own material are a decent stand-in for the new case-study sets.
  • If one domain is the problem, turn your notes on it into a narrated lesson with AI video lectures.

FAQ

How long does it take to get PMP results?

You see a preliminary result on screen as soon as a computer-based exam ends. PMI posts the official report online no later than 10 business days after the exam date and emails you when it is ready. Paper-based results arrive by email in 6 to 8 weeks.

Is the pass shown at the end of the PMP exam final?

Not yet. PMI considers it preliminary until you receive notice that the result is official, and only then are you granted the certification.

Does PMI publish a PMP passing score?

No. Subject matter experts set how many scored questions a qualified candidate must answer correctly, and PMI reports pass/fail with performance ratings, not a percentage.

How many times can I retake the PMP?

You get three attempts within your 1-year eligibility period, paying fees again for the second and third. After three failed attempts you wait 1 year from the last exam before reapplying.

Did the PMP exam change in 2026?

Yes. A new Exam Content Outline took effect on July 9, 2026, with domain weights of 33% People, 41% Process, and 26% Business Environment, and a 240-minute exam of 180 questions.
