GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna Are Live on Scholarly
OpenAI's GPT-5.6 family is now available across Scholarly, with Terra as the balanced chat default, Sol as the premium flagship, and Luna as the efficient option.
OpenAI's new GPT-5.6 family is now live in Scholarly. You can use GPT 5.6 Sol, GPT 5.6 Terra, and GPT 5.6 Luna in AI Chat and choose them across Scholarly's create-with-AI tools.
Each model has a clear job:
- GPT 5.6 Terra is the balanced default for every new chat.
- GPT 5.6 Sol is the premium flagship for the hardest reasoning and most demanding work.
- GPT 5.6 Luna is the efficient option for quick answers and high-volume tasks.
The full family replaces our previous GPT 5.5, GPT 5.4 Mini, and GPT 5.4 Nano lineup.
GPT 5.6 Terra: The New Chat Default
Terra is where most conversations should start. It balances reasoning quality, responsiveness, and cost, so it now opens automatically for new chats on every plan.
Use Terra for everyday questions, source-grounded explanations, study planning, summaries, and the back-and-forth work that makes up most AI conversations. On a paid plan, you can turn thinking on when a question needs a more deliberate answer.
Terra is also available as a recommended option in AI Slides, AI Video Lectures, Deep Research, Infographics, and Flashcards.
GPT 5.6 Sol: OpenAI's Flagship
Sol is the strongest OpenAI option in Scholarly. Pick it when the task needs deeper reasoning, careful instruction following, or a polished long-form result.
It is a good fit for:
- Working through difficult multi-step questions.
- Comparing and synthesizing dense source material.
- Building detailed study guides and structured explanations.
- Producing a final answer where quality matters more than speed or cost.
Sol is a premium model on paid plans. It remains selectable instead of becoming the automatic default, so routine chats stay on the more balanced Terra path.
GPT 5.6 Luna: Efficient by Design
Luna is the lightweight member of the family. Choose it for fast everyday answers, short transformations, brainstorming, or repeated tasks where efficiency matters.
Luna is available for normal chat and as an option in Scholarly's generation tools. It gives you a current OpenAI model without using the flagship for work that does not need it.
Existing Chats Keep Working
You do not need to update old conversations or saved model preferences. Scholarly automatically maps previous selections to the matching GPT-5.6 model:
- GPT 5.5 and GPT 5.4 selections move to GPT 5.6 Sol.
- GPT 5.4 Mini and GPT 5 Mini selections move to GPT 5.6 Terra.
- GPT 5.4 Nano and GPT 5 Nano selections move to GPT 5.6 Luna.
That migration keeps existing chats and creation workflows working while the model picker shows only the current family.
How to Try the New Family
- Open a new chat in Scholarly. GPT 5.6 Terra is selected automatically.
- Open the model menu above the chat input.
- Choose GPT 5.6 Sol for flagship reasoning or GPT 5.6 Luna for an efficient response.
You can also choose a GPT-5.6 model from the paid model picker in AI Slides, AI Video Lectures, Deep Research, Infographics, and Flashcards.
Ready to try it? Open Scholarly and start a new chat with GPT 5.6 Terra.
