AI Story Book Generator
Turn a typed prompt or your own PDFs, slides, and notes into an illustrated children's picture book — a full-color illustration and readable story text on every page, saved as a PDF.
Free to start · No credit card required

Illustrated story books, generated in minutes
Type a story idea or ground it in your own materials. Scholarly writes the story and illustrates every page.
Full illustration per page
Each page pairs a full-color AI illustration with readable story text — laid out as a real picture-book spread, not a wall of paragraphs.
Characters stay consistent
Your characters keep the same look from the first page to the last. The art style's character guidance carries across every illustration in the book.
One downloadable PDF
The finished book is saved to your library as a multi-page PDF you can view, download, and share — just like any other Scholarly content.
How it works
Three steps from a story idea or your sources to a finished illustrated book.
1. Add your source or prompt
Type a story topic like "A gentle bedtime story about Estie and her Papa in the garden", or upload up to 3 sources — PDFs, Word docs, PowerPoint, text files, website URLs, or Google Drive files — to ground the story in your own content. The prompt is optional.
2. Pick an art style
Choose one of four illustration styles — Classic Storybook, Soft Watercolor, Bright & Playful, or Dreamy Pastel. Optionally add custom instructions like "make it rhyming" or "add more details". Language defaults to your global preference.
3. Generate and read
Scholarly's AI writes a warm, character-consistent story and illustrates every page. Generation takes a few minutes with real-time progress — you can leave the page. The finished PDF lands in your library, auto-labeled as an AI Story Book.
Four illustration styles to choose from
Pick the look that fits your story. Each style carries detailed character guidance so your characters stay consistent across every page.
Classic Storybook
Warm, timeless illustrations in the spirit of a traditional bedtime picture book.
Soft Watercolor
Gentle, painterly washes of color — calm, dreamy, and easy on the eyes.
Bright & Playful
Bold colors and lively scenes that grab young readers and keep them turning pages.
Dreamy Pastel
Soft pastel palettes with a quiet, cozy mood — perfect for winding-down stories.
Whichever style you pick, the same art direction is applied to every page so your characters look the same throughout the book. You can also apply one of your saved Custom Designs — your own instructions and reference images — to give every book a personal look.
Everything in a Scholarly story book
Concrete inputs, a clear output, and the details that make the book worth keeping.
Four art styles
Classic Storybook, Soft Watercolor, Bright & Playful, or Dreamy Pastel — each with detailed character instructions for a consistent look.
Per-page full-color art
Every page gets its own full-color AI illustration generated to match the scene, paired with readable story text underneath.
Character consistency
The same characters keep their appearance across all pages, maintained through the art style's system guidance.
Optional source grounding
Start from a prompt alone, or ground the story in PDFs, Word docs, PowerPoint, text files, or website URLs — up to 3 sources per book.
Up to 3 sources
Combine as many as three documents to shape one story — for example a lesson PDF plus a set of notes.
50+ languages
Stories are written in the language set in your account preferences, with support for 50+ languages.
Custom instructions
Add freeform direction like "make it rhyming", "add more details", or a character's name to shape exactly how the story reads.
Download & share
The book is a real PDF in your library — view it, download it, or share it like any other Scholarly content.
Source-grounded or prompt-based
Turn your own study material into a story, or generate a brand-new one from scratch with just a typed idea.
Robust rendering
Every book is laid out and rendered as a clean, reliable PDF — consistent picture-book spreads from cover to cover.
What people make with it
From bedtime stories to story-based lessons, here's where AI Story Book shines.
Personalized bedtime stories
Create a bedtime story with specific character names and themes — your child as the hero, a favorite place, a gentle lesson.
Story-based lessons
Turn lesson notes or a course PDF into a story-based learning narrative that makes a topic stick for younger learners.
Supplementary classroom material
Generate illustrated narrative material to go alongside a unit — a friendly way to introduce or reinforce a concept.
Shareable, printable books
Produce a polished, consistent-art PDF you can print at home, send to family, or keep as a finished book.
How Scholarly compares
Other tools can make images and text — but they aren't built to turn your material into a finished, consistent picture book. Here's where each one wins.
Best for one-off images and text. Tools like ChatGPT with DALL·E or Midjourney can create arbitrary images and copy in a single workflow.
Great for exploring an idea or a single illustration.
Characters drift between images — keeping a consistent look across pages is manual and fiddly.
You assemble the book yourself and link your own sources by hand — there's no grounded, multi-page output.
Best for professional publishing. Platforms like Reedsy or Blurb offer polished publishing workflows and print-on-demand ordering.
Strong for authors taking a finished manuscript to print.
There's real setup overhead, and the writing and illustration are still on you.
Not built for instant generation grounded in your own study materials.
Best for turning your material into a book. Type a prompt or add your PDFs and notes, and get a complete illustrated picture book.
Character consistency across every page, with a full-color illustration and readable text on each one.
Optional source grounding in your own PDFs, Office files, text, and URLs — up to 3 per book.
Free to start, in 50+ languages, saved as a downloadable, shareable PDF.
Ways to start

Every tool here is a purpose-built AI agent
Scholarly doesn't just call a model once. Each feature is run by an autonomous AI agent that reads your material, reasons across multiple models, and can research the web and run code — then hands back a finished, cited artifact.
Multiple models
Agents route each step to the model that does it best, instead of relying on a single one.
Live web research
When your sources aren't enough, agents search the web and cite what they find.
Runs code in a sandbox
Each agent gets its own sandbox to compute, transform data, and build your artifact.
Grounded in your sources
Every output is built from the PDFs, notes, and lectures you upload — not guesswork.
Frequently asked questions
What can I turn into a story book?
You can start from a typed topic prompt alone, or ground the story in your own materials. Supported sources are PDFs, Word documents (.docx), PowerPoint files (.pptx), text files (.txt, .md, and similar), website URLs, and Google Drive files (PDFs, Office docs, and text). You can combine up to 3 sources per book, and the prompt is optional.
What does the finished story book look like?
It's a multi-page illustrated PDF saved to your library as an AI Story Book. Each page contains a full-color AI illustration paired with readable story text. You can view, download, and share the PDF directly from your library, just like any other Scholarly content.
How does it keep characters looking the same across pages?
Each of the four art styles carries detailed character guidance that is applied to every illustration, so your characters keep the same look from the first page to the last.
Which art styles can I choose from?
There are four: Classic Storybook, Soft Watercolor, Bright & Playful, and Dreamy Pastel. Pick the one that fits the mood of your story — each applies a distinct illustration look while keeping characters consistent.
Can I control the story with my own instructions?
Yes. Alongside your prompt and art style, you can add freeform custom instructions to shape the story — for example "make it rhyming", "add more details", or specific character names and themes.
What languages are supported?
Stories are written in the language set in your account preferences, with support for 50+ languages. Set your global language preference and your story book will be generated in it.
How long does generation take?
Generation typically takes a few minutes. The task runs in the background with real-time progress, so you can leave the page — the completed PDF arrives in your library auto-labeled as an AI Story Book.
Is the AI Story Book generator free?
It's free to try — each generation uses one of the free plan's included AI creations, and file upload and source size limits vary by plan. Upgrading unlocks ongoing creation and higher limits.
What can't it do yet?
AI Story Book doesn't include an explicit age-range picker (age-appropriateness is shaped by your prompt and custom instructions), manual page-count control (the AI decides length), per-page image editing or regeneration, print ordering or professional publishing, voice narration or audio, or export formats other than PDF.
