AI Literature Review Generator

Draft a literature review from the papers, not about them

Give Scholarly your research question (and the PDFs you've already collected, if you have them). The research agent reads across published work, maps where studies agree and conflict, and returns a cited synthesis you can verify and build on.

One free lifetime AI Creation Credit to try it, no credit card. Paid plans refresh weekly: 15 AI Creation Credits on Premium, 80 on Laureate.

How it works

From research question to cited synthesis

The review runs as a background Deep Research investigation tuned to academic sources.

01

State the question

Describe the topic and scope of the review: the research question, the timeframe, the populations or contexts that matter. Attach the papers you've already gathered so they anchor the synthesis.

02

The agent reads across the literature

With the papers-and-journals evidence filter leading, it searches, reads, and cross-references published work, following what studies found, how they found it, and where the findings disagree.

03

Get a review you can check

The draft organises the field by theme and argument, cites its sources inline, and flags where the evidence is thin. It's ready for you to verify the citations that matter and shape it into your own review.

What you get

A first draft that respects how reviews actually work

Synthesis by theme and disagreement, not an annotated list of abstracts.

Academic sources first

The papers-and-journals evidence filter steers the investigation towards peer-reviewed work rather than blog posts and summaries of summaries.

Your PDF library included

Attach up to 10 papers, folders, or saved items on Premium (20 on Laureate). The agent treats your collection as primary material and reads beyond it to fill the gaps.

Agreements and conflicts mapped

The synthesis is organised around what the field agrees on, where results conflict, and what remains open: the structure a review is actually judged on.

Inline citations throughout

Claims link to their sources so you can verify before you cite. A review you can't check isn't a review.

Interrogate the draft

Chat with the finished review: ask what a specific study found, why a claim is worded cautiously, or where to look next.

Sized to the task

A one-page evidence brief for a proposal, a decision memo for a committee, or a full investigation for the thesis chapter.

The details

What is an AI literature review generator?

Updated August 2026

An AI literature review generator drafts a synthesis of published research on a question: what the field has found, where studies disagree, and what remains open. In Scholarly, the review runs as a Deep Research investigation. The agent reads across the open literature and any papers you attach, then returns a cited draft organised by theme, at the depth you choose.

  • Synthesis, not summaries. The draft organises findings by theme and disagreement across studies, instead of summarising papers one at a time.
  • Your papers anchor it. Attach the PDFs you've collected and the agent builds on them, reading further only where your collection has gaps.
  • Checkable by design. Inline citations let you verify every claim you plan to keep. The draft is a starting point you own, not a finished review to paste.

The hard part of a literature review was never the writing. It's the reading: locating the relevant studies, holding their findings in mind at once, and noticing that two well-cited papers quietly contradict each other. That's the part an investigation agent is good at. It reads more sources than a person can hold in working memory and keeps track of who found what, under which conditions.

The output is deliberately a draft. It gives you the map of the field (the themes, the load-bearing studies, the disagreements) with citations attached, so your time goes into judgement: which findings you trust, which methods convince you, and what your own review should argue.

Start from the papers you've already collected

A review rarely starts from nothing. You usually have a folder of PDFs: the papers your supervisor sent, the ones the last proposal cited, the ones you found at midnight. Attach them and the agent treats them as the core of the review, reading each one rather than guessing from titles, and extending the search outward from there.

Because the review lives in your Scholarly workspace, the papers stay useful afterwards: chat with any of them individually, pull them into the next investigation, or turn the finished review into slides for a lab meeting or a podcast for the commute.

What it does well, and what stays your job

The agent searches the open web, which reaches a great deal of published research (open-access journals, preprint servers, government and institutional publications), but it is not a subscription database, and it cannot read papers behind paywalls it can't access. For those, upload the PDF and it reads your copy.

And like any AI system, it can misread a study or overstate a finding, which is why every claim carries its citation. Verify the sources you plan to rely on, and treat the draft as the fastest possible route to a review that is still, in the end, yours.

FAQ

Literature review questions, answered

Is the literature review generator free?

You can try it free: every account includes one lifetime AI Creation Credit, and a review run counts as one creation. Paid plans refresh weekly (15 AI Creation Credits on Premium and 80 on Laureate), shared across research, videos, podcasts, and other generated artifacts.

Can it use the papers I've already downloaded?

Yes, that's the recommended way to run it. Attach up to 10 sources on Premium (20 on Laureate): uploaded PDFs, workspace folders, saved pages, or Google Drive files. The agent reads them as primary material and searches the open literature to fill gaps.

Does it cover paywalled journals?

It reads what it can reach on the open web (open-access journals, preprints, and institutional publications), plus any paper you upload, including your own copies of paywalled work. It is not a subscription database like Scopus or Web of Science.

Is this safe to use for a thesis or publication?

Use it as a research assistant, not a ghostwriter. It maps the field and drafts a cited synthesis; you verify the citations, judge the methods, and write the review you submit. Check your institution's policy on AI assistance and disclose use where required.

How is this different from the research paper analyser?

The analyser works deeply on one paper you upload: its methods, findings, and limitations. The literature review generator works across many papers on a question, synthesising the field. They pair well: analyse the pivotal study, then situate it with a review.
