Language details

How Scholarly handles Japanese

What changes when the output language is Japanese, taken from how the speech and rendering pipeline actually works.

Voice

Narration is spoken by a multilingual voice that is told to speak Japanese instead of guessing the language from the text, and asked to read numbers and units the way a native speaker says them.

Script and layout

Kanji, kana and English terms render on every scene with a font that covers Japanese, and captions and the transcript are in Japanese.

Variants in the picker

The picker has one Japanese entry, and Japanese is also one of Scholarly's interface languages.

Check before you share

Check the readings of personal names, company names and uncommon kanji in the first scenes; add a reading in the instructions if one is misread.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which formats can I make in Japanese?

Narrated video lectures, training videos, three-speaker podcasts, flashcards and quizzes all take Japanese as their output language, and so do Summaries, slides, mind maps and documents.

Can I make Japanese material for free?

Yes, to start. The Free plan includes one lifetime AI Creation Credit and one upload (up to 8 MB; the first 32 pages of a PDF are read), with no credit card. A free video lecture or podcast in Japanese is about 2 minutes long and shared by link; longer lengths, 1080p and downloads are paid.

Can I turn an English document into Japanese material?

Yes. Pick Japanese as the output language and the lecture, episode, cards or quiz are written in Japanese from the English source. The reverse works too: a Japanese document can become English material.

Can my source be in English and the output in Japanese?

Yes. The source and the output do not have to share a language. Upload an English PDF, deck or recording, set the output language to Japanese in the creation panel, and the script, text and narration are written in Japanese. Leave the setting on Auto and Scholarly follows the language of the source instead.

Is Scholarly's interface available in Japanese?

Yes. Scholarly's interface is available in Japanese: choose ⁨日本語⁩ as your app language in Settings › Appearance › App language, and new accounts open in it when your browser asks for it. What you create has its own output language: pick Japanese once as your default in Settings, or per creation in the language row of the creation panel.
