Can AI make flashcards in Japanese from my notes?

Direct answer

Can AI make flashcards in Japanese from my notes?

Yes. Upload the material, set the output language to Japanese, and Scholarly writes question-and-answer cards from it in Japanese. Review and edit the deck, then study it with SM-2 spaced repetition in Scholarly.

  • Free plan: One lifetime AI Creation Credit and one upload (up to 8 MB; the first 32 pages of a PDF are read), enough for one Japanese deck studied with SM-2 spaced repetition. Anki export is paid. No credit card.
  • Paid plans: Premium ($30/mo in US dollars, lower local prices in some countries) includes 15 AI Creation Credits a week, uploads up to 300 MB and Anki export. Laureate ($99/mo) includes 80 credits a week.
  • What goes in: PDFs, typed or handwritten notes, images, slide decks, website links, YouTube videos or pasted text.
  • What comes out: An editable deck with a question on the front and a grounded answer on the back, studied with SM-2 spaced repetition. Anki export is on paid plans.
  • How Japanese is handled: Cards are written in Japanese, whether the source is in Japanese or in English. To learn Japanese itself, upload your own vocabulary list or course chapter and the cards come from it. Narration is spoken by a multilingual voice that is told to speak Japanese instead of guessing the language from the text, and asked to read numbers and units the way a native speaker says them.

Language details

How Scholarly handles Japanese

What changes when the output language is Japanese, taken from how the speech and rendering pipeline actually works.

Voice

Narration is spoken by a multilingual voice that is told to speak Japanese instead of guessing the language from the text, and asked to read numbers and units the way a native speaker says them.

Script and layout

Kanji, kana and English terms render on every scene with a font that covers Japanese, and captions and the transcript are in Japanese.

Variants in the picker

The picker has one Japanese entry, and Japanese is also one of Scholarly's interface languages.

Check before you share

Check the readings of personal names, company names and uncommon kanji in the first scenes; add a reading in the instructions if one is misread.

Training for teams in Japan

Turn English manuals and decks from a global head office into Japanese training modules, or the other way round.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can my source be in English and the output in Japanese?

Yes. The source and the output do not have to share a language. Upload an English PDF, deck or recording, set the output language to Japanese in the creation panel, and the script, text and narration are written in Japanese. Leave the setting on Auto and Scholarly follows the language of the source instead.

Can I turn an English document into Japanese material?

Yes. Pick Japanese as the output language and the lecture, episode, cards or quiz are written in Japanese from the English source. The reverse works too: a Japanese document can become English material.

Is the Japanese flashcard maker free?

You can try it free: the Free plan includes one AI Creation Credit and one upload of up to 8 MB. Premium includes 15 AI Creation Credits a week, larger uploads and Anki export.

Can I use it to learn Japanese?

Yes, from your own material. Upload the vocabulary list, textbook chapter or class notes you are studying and the cards are written from it, so the deck matches your course. Scholarly does not ship a ready-made Japanese course or word list.

Is Scholarly's interface available in Japanese?

Yes. Scholarly's interface is available in Japanese: choose ⁨日本語⁩ as your app language in Settings › Appearance › App language, and new accounts open in it when your browser asks for it. What you create has its own output language: pick Japanese once as your default in Settings, or per creation in the language row of the creation panel.

Make your first Japanese version from a file you already have
