NotebookLM Video Overviews Alternative: Longer Lectures You Can Download

Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) Video Overviews are quick, well-narrated summaries: an Explainer, or a Short of about 60 seconds. Scholarly makes the full lecture: set any length up to 45 minutes, get chapters, captions, and question checkpoints, and download it as an MP4 with .vtt and .srt captions on a paid plan.

Comparing tools for a whole team?

Scholarly Teams puts your team, class, lab, or company on one Premium or Laureate plan - the chosen access for every member, all built from your shared material.

Where NotebookLM Video Overviews Still Shines

NotebookLM Video Overviews is a great tool with real strengths worth acknowledging.

Excellent narration, fast summaries

Video Overviews are among the best-narrated AI summaries available, and a Short of about 60 seconds is a quick way to preview a set of sources.

Styles and a Cinematic format

Pick Classic, Whiteboard, Watercolor, Retro Print, Heritage, Paper-craft, Kawaii, or Anime, or describe your own. Cinematic overviews (Google AI Ultra, 18+, English) add generated animation.

Part of a Google workspace

Included with a Google account and grounded in your notebook sources, with Audio Overviews, mind maps, flashcards, and quizzes beside it. Since late August 2026, usage limits refresh every five hours instead of daily.

Where Scholarly Fits Better

Up to 45 minutes, planned to the length you pick

Choose 2, 15, or 45 minutes, or a custom target up to 45 on Premium or Laureate. The lecture is planned to that length, and the video page shows the requested and delivered runtime.

An MP4 you can publish

Paid plans download the MP4 (with the Scholarly logo off if you choose) and an export pack: slides, the narration script by chapter, and .vtt and .srt captions, ready for an LMS, course platform, or intranet.

Chapters, transcript, and checkpoints

Every lecture is chaptered, with synced captions, a searchable transcript, questions during playback, and an AI chat that answers from the transcript and your files.

Your script, as written

Turn on Use my script as written and the narrator keeps your wording and order, for a lecture you already wrote or wording that was approved.

Built for teaching and training

Pick exact pages of a long PDF (up to 1,000 on Premium), combine up to 10 sources, apply a team customisation profile with your logo and colours, and share through a team library.

The same source, every format

The same upload becomes a quiz, exam, flashcards, slides, or a podcast.

How Scholarly Works

Step 1: Upload the document

A PDF, Word file, PowerPoint deck, or your own script. Pick the pages this video should cover.

Step 2: Generate the lecture

Choose a length (up to 45 minutes on paid plans), a language, and a voice. Scholarly writes the narration from your pages and adds chapters, captions, and question checkpoints.

Step 3: Review and share

Read the transcript against the source, then share a link, add it to your team library, or download the MP4 and captions on a paid plan.

Scholarly vs NotebookLM Video Overviews: A Closer Look

Gemini Notebook (Google renamed NotebookLM in July 2026) makes Video Overviews in two main formats: Explainer, a structured overview, and Short, about 60 seconds. Cinematic overviews are for Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over, in English. Google's help page offers a download option without stating the file format, and notes that generation can take more than 30 minutes.

A Scholarly lecture is a different object. You pick the pages, a length up to 45 minutes on a paid plan, a language from over 70, and a voice, and it renders a chaptered lecture with synced captions, a transcript, and question checkpoints. On Premium or Laureate you download a 1080p MP4 plus .vtt and .srt captions, so it can live in an LMS or course platform.

If you want a fast summary of your sources, Video Overviews are excellent. If you need a full lecture, a training module, or a file you can publish, Scholarly is built for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long are NotebookLM Video Overviews?

Google's help page describes Short videos as about 60 seconds and Explainer videos as a structured, comprehensive overview, without publishing a fixed length. Scholarly lectures can target any length up to 45 minutes on Premium and Laureate.

Can I download a NotebookLM Video Overview as an MP4?

Google's help page shows a download option but does not state the file format. Scholarly downloads lectures as MP4 on paid plans, with an export pack that adds the slides, the narration script by chapter, and .vtt and .srt captions.

Is NotebookLM still called NotebookLM?

Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. Video Overviews are the same feature.

What does Scholarly add to Video Overviews?

Length and publishing. Scholarly plans a lecture up to 45 minutes, adds chapters, synced captions, a transcript, and question checkpoints, narrates your script word for word if you ask, and downloads as an MP4 with caption files on a paid plan.

Is Gemini Notebook free?

It is included with a Google account. Since late August 2026, Google uses compute-based usage limits that refresh every five hours instead of daily caps; Google AI plans raise them, and Cinematic is Ultra-only. Scholarly is free to sign up; long lectures, 1080p, and MP4 downloads need Premium or Laureate.

Which is better for a teacher or trainer?

For a quick recap of your sources, Video Overviews. For a lecture or training module you will publish, Scholarly: a set length up to 45 minutes, chapters and captions, your own script if you have one, and an MP4 for your LMS.

Need the Full Lecture, Not the Overview?

Upload your source, pick a length up to 45 minutes, and get a chaptered lecture with captions you can publish.
