Grok Alternative: Use Grok on Your Own Sources

Grok is xAI's fast, opinionated assistant with live access to X. Scholarly includes Grok 4.7 beside Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Muse in one subscription, grounds every answer in the PDFs, notes, and recordings you upload, and turns them into narrated video lectures, podcasts, slides, flashcards, and cited answers.

Comparing tools for a whole team?

Scholarly Teams puts your team, class, lab, or company on one Premium or Laureate plan - the chosen access for every member, all built from your shared material.

Where Grok Still Shines

Grok is a great tool with real strengths worth acknowledging.

Real-time pulse of X and the web

Grok is built into X and can draw on public posts as they happen, which makes it genuinely good for breaking news, trends, and what people are saying right now. Scholarly is built around your own documents, not the live social feed, so it does not try to replace that.

Grok Imagine for images and video

Grok Imagine creates and edits images and generates short video clips from text or a still image. If open-ended visual creation is the job, Grok is the stronger tool. Scholarly's video is narrower on purpose: a narrated, chaptered lecture built from the sources you upload.

Voice, apps, and a high ceiling

Grok has polished mobile apps and hands-free voice conversations, it is free to start, and its higher tiers go all the way up to SuperGrok Heavy's multi-agent mode (see xAI's plans page for current rates). For a general assistant on xAI's models, it is a strong pick.

Why People Switch to Scholarly

Grok is included, next to six other labs

Paid Scholarly plans can pick Grok 4.7 in AI Chat, and so can every other model in the picker: GPT 6.1 Sol, Terra, and Luna, Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, and Haiku 5.5, Gemini 4 Argon, Grok 4.7, Muse Spark 1.3 and Muse Wonder, Mistral Large 3, and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. You switch per question or mid-conversation, so one company's style, rules, or outage is never the end of the conversation.

Grounded in your library, not the feed

Upload lecture slides, a textbook chapter, a contract, or a recording once. Every chat, quiz, video, and report then works from that persistent library and cites the page it used. Grok can analyse files you upload; Scholarly is built so the same sources keep feeding every chat and artifact that follows.

Finished artifacts, not just answers

Scholarly turns a source into a narrated video lecture of up to 45 minutes, a multi-speaker podcast of up to 60 minutes, a slide deck, a flashcard deck that exports to Anki, a graded practice exam, or a cited research report. You leave with something you can study, present, or share.

Built for learning from your own material

Students turn lectures into practice exams, exam candidates turn a review book into flashcards, and professionals turn a policy manual into a short video. Every output cites the source, so you can check it as you study.

Unlimited chat on every paid plan

Chat on Auto has no message cap on paid plans. Grok 4.7, Claude, Best, and the other named models draw on a weekly premium chat allowance, and chat keeps answering on Auto when it runs out. Weekly AI Creation Credits only meter creation jobs like videos and podcasts.

The same product for teams

Scholarly Teams (1-29 seats self-serve, Premium for Teams $35/seat/mo) adds a shared source library, Owner/Admin/Member roles, activity reporting, and one bill. Upload the handbook once and everyone works from the same grounded answers, training videos, and quizzes.

How Scholarly Works

Step 1: Add Your Content

Upload PDFs, paste notes, add images, or link YouTube videos. Any study material works.

Step 2: AI Builds Your Study Materials

Our AI reads your material and turns it into grounded answers, flashcards, quizzes, summaries, and more.

Step 3: Study Your Way

Review with spaced repetition, listen as a podcast, watch as a video lecture, or export to Anki or PDF.

Scholarly vs Grok: A Closer Look

The clearest difference is what each tool is built around. Grok is built around xAI's models and X: it is quick, conversational, plugged into what is happening right now, and strong at open-ended image and video generation. Scholarly is built around your sources: you upload your material once, and everything after that, from a chat answer to a video lecture, is grounded in it with citations back to the page.

You do not have to give up Grok to get that. Grok 4.7 is one of the models in Scholarly's chat picker on paid plans, next to Claude Opus 5.5, GPT 6.1 Sol, Gemini 4 Argon, Muse, Mistral, and DeepSeek. Ask Grok a question about your lecture notes, switch to Claude for a careful rewrite, then turn the same notes into a podcast or a practice exam without leaving the workspace.

On price: Grok is free to start, and SuperGrok starts at $30/mo as of October 2026, with SuperGrok Heavy above it (see xAI's plans page for current rates). Scholarly Premium is $30/mo or $180/yr with 15 weekly AI Creation Credits, and Laureate is $99/mo with 80 credits and four times Premium's premium chat allowance. Teams are $35/seat/mo for Premium for Teams and $110/seat/mo for Laureate for Teams, self-serve for 1-29 seats. If you want live X answers and image or video generation, Grok is the better fit. If you want AI that works from your own material and hands you something to study from, that is what Scholarly is for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Scholarly a good Grok alternative?

Yes, if your work starts from your own material. Scholarly includes Grok 4.7 in chat on paid plans, adds models from six other AI labs, grounds answers in your uploaded sources with page citations, and turns those sources into video lectures, podcasts, slides, flashcards, and practice exams. If you mainly want live answers from X, image and video generation, or voice on the go, Grok remains a strong choice.

Can I use Grok inside Scholarly?

Yes. Paid plans can pick Grok 4.7 in the AI Chat model picker and switch to another model mid-conversation. Grok 4.7 is also an option in several creation tools, including video lectures, podcasts, slides, and research reports. It draws on the weekly premium chat allowance in chat.

Which AI models does Scholarly include?

AI Chat has two modes: Auto (GPT 6 Luna, unlimited on paid plans) and Best (GPT 6.1 Sol). Paid plans can also pick a model by name: GPT 6.1 Sol, Terra, and Luna, Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, and Haiku 5.5, Gemini 4 Argon, Grok 4.7, Muse Spark 1.3 and Muse Wonder, Mistral Large 3, and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. Named models and Best draw on a weekly premium chat allowance; when it runs out, chat keeps answering on Auto until it resets. The free plan chats on Auto. Chat never spends an AI Creation Credit.

Is Scholarly's AI chat really unlimited?

On paid plans, chat on Auto has no message cap. Best and the named models, including Claude and Grok, use a weekly premium chat allowance and fall back to Auto when it runs out. Weekly AI Creation Credits meter creation jobs such as video lectures, podcasts, and slide decks, never chat. The free plan is a trial: 3 lifetime chat messages on Auto, 1 lifetime AI Creation Credit, and 1 lifetime upload.

Does Scholarly have Grok's access to X?

No. Scholarly does not read X posts in real time. It is built around the sources you bring, and Deep Research covers the open web with cited reports when you need it. For what people are posting right now, Grok is the better tool.

How much does Scholarly cost compared to Grok?

Scholarly Premium is $30/mo or $180/yr with 15 weekly AI Creation Credits, and Laureate is $99/mo with 80 credits and four times Premium's premium chat allowance. Teams are $35/seat/mo for Premium for Teams and $110/seat/mo for Laureate for Teams, self-serve for 1-29 seats. Grok is free to start, and SuperGrok starts at $30/mo as of October 2026 (see xAI's plans page for current rates). Scholarly Premium costs about the same as SuperGrok and adds models from six more labs plus artifacts built from your own files.

Is Scholarly for students or professionals?

Both. Students and exam candidates use it to turn lectures, textbooks, and notes into practice exams, flashcards, and video lectures. Professionals and researchers use it to turn reports, papers, and work documents into cited answers, briefings, and training. Teams get the same product with a shared library and one bill.

Ready to Put Grok to Work on Your Own Material?

Pick Grok 4.7 or any of the other models per question, keep one source library, and leave with a lecture, a podcast, or a practice exam instead of a chat thread.
