The Locked Bible and Locked Bodies in The Handmaid’s Tale

Thesis: In Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Gilead controls women by controlling both scripture and female reproduction. The regime literally locks away the Bible so that men can monopolize interpretation, and it also “locks” women’s bodies through reproductive coercion, restricted movement, surveillance, and ritualized sexual violence. Atwood’s point is not simply that religion is abused, but that scripture becomes political power when access, interpretation, and authority are monopolized by patriarchy.

1) The “locked Bible” is a monopoly on interpretation

One of the novel’s most revealing scenes is the Commander’s household Bible reading. The Bible is kept in a locked casket or box, and only the Commander has the key. That physical lock matters: it turns scripture into property, not shared public text. Offred recognizes that the regime fears open reading because scripture, if freely accessible, could be interpreted in ways that threaten Gilead’s authority. In one secondary reading, the Bible is described as an “incendiary device,” which captures the novel’s logic: the text is dangerous to the regime precisely because it can generate dissent when women and lower-status people are allowed to read it for themselves.

Scholarly work on the novel emphasizes this point. Kouhestani’s “Disciplining the Body: Power and Language in Margaret Atwood’s Dystopian Novel The Handmaid’s Tale” (2013) argues that Gilead’s power depends on controlling language, literacy, and the body together; women are denied reading and writing because knowledge creates power. The result is a state monopoly over meaning. The Commander does not simply read scripture aloud; he filters it, paraphrases it, and selects only what supports the regime. In other words, the Bible is not absent in Gilead—it is present, but only as authorized quotation.

That is why the locked Bible is more than censorship. It is controlled exegesis: the state decides what the Bible means, who may speak it, and when it may be heard. The Bible becomes law only after it has been locked, curated, and spoken through male authority.

2) Selective scripture turns religion into state ideology

Atwood shows that Gilead does not reject religion; it weaponizes it. The Commander’s readings often draw on Genesis, especially the story of Rachel and Bilhah in Genesis 30:1–3, where a barren wife offers her maid to her husband in order to produce children. Gilead lifts this passage out of context and turns it into precedent for the Ceremony, the monthly ritualized rape of the Handmaid.

This is the central move of the novel: biblical narrative is converted into policy. As Di Minico’s “Spatial and Psychophysical Domination of Women in Dystopia” (2019) argues, the regime uses Christian fundamentalism to justify reproductive slavery and to frame women as “two-legged wombs.” The Ceremony is not presented as lustful violence; it is staged as sacred duty. That staging matters because ritual makes coercion look natural. The body is positioned, named, watched, and interpreted so that state violence can masquerade as divine order.

Qiuyi Tan’s “Textual Hijacks” (2009) makes a related point about how Atwood literalizes biblical imagery. In Gilead, biblical language is not merely quoted; it is made physical, bureaucratic, and punitive. Scripture becomes a script for public violence. The effect is that the novel’s religious language never stays abstract: it always comes back to the body.

3) “Locked bodies”: reproduction, movement, and speech are controlled together

If the locked Bible controls interpretation, the “locked body” controls women’s lived reality. Gilead reduces women to reproductive function, assigns them into rigid classes, and limits where they can go, what they can wear, and what they can say. Handmaids are monitored by the Eyes, isolated from one another, and prevented from reading signs, books, or even much ordinary language. The state’s power is therefore not only sexual; it is spatial and linguistic.

Di Minico’s article is especially useful here because it shows that Gilead’s domination is psychophysical: the regime uses spatial restriction, surveillance, and enforced roles to erase autonomy. Women are pushed out of public life and confined to domestic or reproductive function. This is why the novel’s rules about dress, movement, and public behavior matter so much. They do not merely express ideology; they produce obedience.

The same pattern appears in the novel’s language policies. Gilead bans female literacy because reading enables comparison, memory, and resistance. If women cannot read scripture, laws, or signs, they cannot check the regime’s claims against the text. Kouhestani emphasizes that Gilead’s control of language is a way of disciplining the body: when language is narrowed, thought is narrowed, and when thought is narrowed, the body becomes easier to govern.

4) Ritual, surveillance, and patriarchy work as one system

Atwood’s sharpest insight is that scripture, ritual, and surveillance reinforce one another. The Ceremony is sacred theater; the Wall is public theater; the Commander’s Bible reading is private theater. In each case, power depends on spectatorship. Tan’s reading of the Wall as a literalization of biblical judgment shows how Gilead turns religious imagery into a spectacle of fear: citizens are supposed to look, remember, and submit. The 2024 Journal for Religion, Film and Media article on the Bible, religion, and power in The Handmaid’s Tale similarly emphasizes that religion is the cornerstone of Gilead’s ideology and that the novel repeatedly stages “seeing and being seen” as a mechanism of control.

This is patriarchy operating through institution rather than merely through individual male cruelty. The Commander does not only dominate women as a man; he dominates them as an interpreter, lawgiver, and gatekeeper of the Word. The Bible is locked, the house is watched, the body is scheduled, and reproduction is nationalized. Scripture therefore becomes a political technology: it legitimizes male authority, erases female agency, and makes violence appear holy.

5) Clear meaning of the title

Read in this light, The Handmaid’s Tale is a story about what happens when a patriarchal state controls both meaning and maternal life. The “locked Bible” names controlled interpretation: scripture is inaccessible to women and usable only by men in power. The “locked bodies” name controlled female reproduction and movement: women’s fertility, labor, speech, and mobility are enclosed by law, ritual, and surveillance.

That is the novel’s larger warning. Gilead does not merely abuse religion; it turns religion into a system for regulating women’s bodies. Atwood’s title marks the result as a “tale” because Offred’s narration is the counterforce to that system: where Gilead locks the Bible and locks bodies, Offred tells the story and keeps meaning moving.

Bottom line: the novel shows that authoritarian theocracy works by making scripture exclusive and the female body public property. Gilead’s power lies in the link between the two: locked interpretation produces locked bodies, and locked bodies make the regime’s interpretation look like truth.
