Procedure: Knock on door, wait for a response.
Step 1.
Procedure: Identify self by name. Identify resident by name.
Step 2.
Procedure: Wash your hands.
Step 3.
Procedure: Explain procedure to resident. Speak clearly, slowly, and directly. Maintain face-to-face contact whenever possible.
Step 4.
Procedure: Provide for resident's privacy with curtain, screen, or door.
Step 5.
Procedure: Look at the diet card or menu. Ask resident to state their name.
Step 6.
Procedure: Raise the head of the bed. Make sure resident is in an upright sitting position (at a 90-degree angle).
Step 7.
Procedure: Lock bed wheels. Adjust bed height to where you'll be able to sit at resident's eye level.
Step 8.
Procedure: Place meal tray where it can be easily seen by resident, such as on the overbed table.
Step 9.
Procedure: Help resident to clean hands with hand wipes if resident cannot do it on their own.
Step 10.
Procedure: Help resident to put on clothing protector, if desired.
Step 11.
Procedure: Sit in a chair facing resident at the resident's eye level. Sit on the stronger side if the resident has one-sided weakness.
Step 12.
Procedure: Tell the resident what foods and beverages are on the tray. Offer a drink of Beverage. Ask the resident what they would like to eat first.
Step 13.
Procedure: Check the temperature of the food with your hand. Using utensils, offer the food in bite-sized pieces. Tell the resident the content of each bite of food offered. Alternate types of food, allowing for resident's preferences. Do not feed all of one type before offering another type. Make sure resident's mouth is empty before next bite or sip. Report any swallowing problems to the nurse immediately.
Step 14.
Procedure: Offer sips of beverage to resident throughout the meal. If you are holding the cup, touch it to the resident's lips before you tip it. Give small, frequent sips.

Procedure: Talk with the resident during the meal. Do not rush the resident.

Remove the clothing protector if used. Place it and used washcloths or wipes in proper containers.
What should you do before removing the food tray?
Check for eyeglasses, dentures, or any personal items before removing tray.
How should you make the resident comfortable after the meal?
Keep resident in the upright position for at least 30 minutes. Make sure bed is free of crumbs. Return bed to lowest position. Remove privacy measures. Place tray in proper area. Place call light within resident's reach.

Report any changes in resident to the nurse.
