What is the function of the circulatory system?
To transport oxygen, nutrients, and disease-fighting materials, as well as to distribute heat throughout the body.
What are the components of the circulatory system?
Blood, heart, blood vessels, and the lymphatic system.
What are the layers of arteries composed of?
1. Outer layer of connective tissue 2. Middle layer of smooth muscle 3. Inner layer of endothelial tissue.
What is the purpose of capillaries?
To allow the exchange of important substances and wastes between the blood and body cells through diffusion.
What is the function of veins in the circulatory system?
To carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart, aided by muscle contractions, valves, and breathing movements.
Describe the structure of the heart.
The heart is divided into four chambers: the right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle, and left ventricle. Valves separate the atria from the ventricles and keep blood flowing in one direction.
What causes the heartbeat?
The heartbeat is caused by signals sent from the pacemaker (SA node) that initiate contractions in both the atria and ventricles, resulting in the pulse.
What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is a measure of the pressure exerted against the vessel walls by the blood and provides information about the condition of arteries.
What is the function of plasma in the blood?
Plasma carries nutrients, waste products, vitamins, minerals, hormones, and chemical messengers throughout the body.
What is the function of platelets in the blood?
Platelets play an important role in forming blood clots by releasing chemicals that produce fibrin, which traps blood platelets and red blood cells at the site of a wound.
